  • Some Tips from you 4th Geners.

So yesterday I was looking for a new car to tide me over till my project car is completed and I ran across a 1994 Firebird V6 with T-Tops and a 5 Speed Stick that I could not pass up due to the price.
The car had high miles at 199,000 on it, but the owner was an older man that claimed that he had replaced the clutch 1500 miles ago and that the high miles were due to driving it a lot back and forth between Michigan and Georgia.
He said since having their first child his wife was pressuring him to sell it, and since he had not driven it for a year because of not having time, he figured he would sell it. Well, that is the story at least.

    Now to my questions.

So now I have a car with lots of miles on it that sat for a year that doesn’t burn oil and does not smoke.

What would you recommend I do to this car to freshen it up? ß Positive suggestions only ok.
I have been more of a V8 third Gen owner. I would know exactly what to do on that technology, but this is something slightly different and that is why I am asking the experts.

I am thinking about doing the following:
Change Oil (But to what I am not exactly sure, (synthetic, or high mileage etc)
    Replace Spark Plugs
    Replace Plug wires.
    Do a radiator fluid flush.
    Any other suggestions?

I also need a headliner for it. Any suggestions on who makes a good one?

Also keep in mind that I am just trying to freshen it up some so that I can get it back on the road to start driving asap. Once I get my project done, I am going to spend more time on it fixing it up even more. So please, no suggestions like, yank that 3.4 and put in a LS1.
If given time and money I would go that route, but have neither right now.

    Thanks in advance.

Plugs, wires and radiator flush are all good ideas. I would also look over the brakes make sure the rotors and pads are in good shape, maybe replace the brake fluid. You may also want to replace the fuel filter and run a can of seafoam in the oil and gas. Search over on camaroz28 and ls1tech for a headliner, people are always parting out cars on those sites.

I'd replace the O2 sensors and check the cat out with that many miles. I'd want to replace all the fluids with that mamy miles as well. How are the shocks? As far as I know no one makes replacement headliners for 4th gens yet.

I found replacement headliners for 4th gens on Ebay but they are the ABS ones. I have heard mixed reviews.

Perform an oil change every 3000 miles and service the vehicle regularly (i.e. Tune-Up) and it will last you a long time. My Camaro was a 3.4/5 speed car and it ran great up until 278,000 miles. . .

+1 on the Seafoam. I'd do the plugs and wires after you Seafoam it.

Not really trying to get power out of this car.
I am just interested in doing the necessary maintenance that the previous owner may or may not have done.

I still own an 85 Trans-Am that is heavily modified, so with this 84 I am really just looking at more of everyday reliability with a bit of style.

One heads up on the O2 sensors, it has 3. The 94 3.4's were actually OBD 1.5 and had two front O2 sensors in the manifolds and then one post cat. Found that out the hard way with my 94 V6 Firebird when I had one O2 go bad and replaced the only one I saw and the other was bad and kept wiping out the new one. Finally a parts store guy told me it had two. I was used to OBD I vehicles that only had one in the manifold.
