  • V6 max RPM differences

    I have a v6 96,

Sometimes when I magically transform and have a lead foot, it'll really get up and go to 5- 5 1/2 RPM, and you can tell it's trying.

Then others times it'll just go to 3-4k and that will be how high it goes before shifting.

Seems to happen on different days.

What could be the cause of this? It seems some days my car acts differently. It's confusing...

          It's floored, trust me.

It's not a difference in how much acceleration I'm telling it to go.

Could be a clogged cat or fuel filter. Both will kill power and be intermittent at first, then it gets worse. I thought I had trans problems because my car wouldn't shift at full throttle, turns out it was a clogged cat and the car wasn't making enough power for the computer to tell it to shift.

Mine would do that too. Sometimes it would shift early and lack power, other times it would hit the rev limiter and not shift. It was all over the place which is why I thought it was a trans issue. I took it to a trans shop and they put it on a Tech 2 and that's when he said it wasn't making enough power for the computer to tell it to shift so the trans was just sitting there stuck in the same gear. I found the cat was bad after switching coils, cleaning the MAF and it still acting the same. On a hunch I knocked on the cat and could hear it rattling. I never heard it rattle while driving. Luckily it was still under GM's 8 year/80K mile warranty so I got it replaced for free.
