  • Help Please

Monday afternoon my car started these symptoms, and today manifested really bad and had to limp it home from Holland(30 miles).

    Symptoms:

Poor throttle response(leave heckling for later), then car will stall.

After a few(2-5) minutes am able to get it started, runs for a few minutes, then I lose throttle response again and car will stall.

It acts like a carb'd engine running out of gas, that what it reminds me of.

The only code I could pull was; P0300 = multiple cylinder misfire.

Here's the real kicker. While at traffic light @ corner of River and Lakewood, Mr. Ricer and pulls next to me with his Civic. I could see him through peripheral vision, checking out my car. Light turns green and my car stalls, Ricer drives away safe and chuckling. So, Mr. WS6 decided to nap rather than feed.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Rusty

PS, sorry about the angry emotion, was supposed to go at end of 2nd to last sentence, couldn't remove it.

        Could you borrow one?

        Does it have trouble starting?

Don't know who to ask to borrow. It starts OK after it sits for a few(3-5) minutes. Then runs for couple(no more) minutes then i lose throttle response again it it will stall if I dont shut it off.

You said you had a multiple missfire dectected code, Start with your plugs, wires... But since its a multiple missfire get a scantool on it and watch what cylinders are missfiring. Does your car have one ignition coil or multiple ones, If its got multiple ones I would start there.

Just go down the list of basics, Ignition, and fuel system, If your ignition system is all good then move on to the injectors, they could be starting to go once they get warm,

Plugs/Wires dont give these symptoms, no multiple coils, if it were ignition it would not be intermittent.

The amount of time that lapses doesnt give the injectors time to cool off.

It's like I'm running out of gas, am able to start it after few mins, runs, then repeats symptoms.

if your car has a throttle positioning sensor, TPS, you can easily check this with a voltmeter. I'd check that puppy out only takes a minute.

Yes it still has cats. The symptoms I'm having go away and come back. I can restart the car after a few minutes, it runs fine then it acts like its running out of gas. If it were the cats, symptoms would not go away/be intermittent, would they.

If it were the TPS, the problem would be constant, wouldn't it.

                      Unless it's a heat issue.

Which it doesn't appear to be (cats don't have heat issues, that I know of).

Your cats could be clogged, it would do exactly that. Or it could be the fuel pump, or fuel filter, you gotta check your fuel pressure, then go from there.

If you don't have a fuel pressure guage, do a quick check for me Rusty....run the car until it dies....when it dies and won't restart....spray a bunch of carb cleaner into the throttle body and see if it fires up. That will either eliminate or point to a fuel pump/injector issue.

I'm with James on this one. That simple test should point to or eliminate fuel supply issues. If you were closer I'd loan you my fuel pressure guage.

Thanks guys for all of your support, advise and generous gesture (Gary for tool loan)!!!! I was able to get it resolved, turns out it was the Ignition Module. Had it tested, failed the test and replaced it. $60 and 45 minutes(wrapped some wire harness ends with Posi Seal) later she breaths again.

It really pays to ask people what they think the possibilities could be, sure has saved me lots of money and wrench time.

Thanks again to all, I appreciate it.
