The clutch is ringing BAD on mine, I heard your best off to just replace the whole compressor with the clutch because either most ruin the compressor getting the clutch off or shortly after replacing the clutch the compressor goes bad.

Advance auto has a compressor for 240, should I just replace mine? What all is involved? Just taking it somewhere to have it drained, swapping the compressor (how hard is it to do?) and then recharging the system?

WRONG WRONG WRONG. I work at a shop. ALL REFRIGERANT HAS TO BE RECOVERED BY FEDERAL LAW. Thats why you have to be air conditioning certified to buy refrigerant now. Plus if you open it up to the air you will get air into your a/c system. Not saying that most people care but if someone caught you releasing your refrigerant into the air they can call the police and you will be arrested. They have found out years ago that r134a does damage the atmosphere too. Just not as bad as r12 did.

This winter my clutch in the compressor went bad and shot metal shavings throughout the whole system. Everything had to be replaced. It was quite the undertaking and ended up costing $800+.

Or you could just take off the belt.

You are correct about VENTING it.
But You don't have to be certified to buy 134. Anyone can buy it. .
You don't even have to fix the leak on a 134 car before you charge it. R12 you do.

i dont think they have the same bolt patterns (LS1 bolts attach to engine side whereas 3.8 bolts onto front acc bracket)

i didnt know if you could use it for parts though
