  • Fuel Pump replacement

    Hey guys,

I need to replace the fuel pump in my '97 Formula. Just wondering how many of you have performed this on your cars and if you have any suggestions that would be helpful. I've always done the work on my own cars, so taking the rear end out to get at it doesn't scare me, it's the time commitment.

I'm considering cutting an access hole to swap the pump, it would save A LOT of time. Even though I plan on keeping I'm not absolutely comfortable with putting a hole in it. I have a friend that can get me a piece of stainless to cover the hole and I have some pretty good ideas for fastening it and rust-proofing when done.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Trap door is the best way to go.... Let us know what you do. Its really not that big of a deal in my opinion.

I just did mine about a month ago. Basically if your dropping the rear you are looking at a FULL day at least of work. If you cut a trap door it will take 3 hours max. I was really scared to do it but just got going and wasn't that hard.

The longest part is waiting for the glue to dry for the fuel bucket, which I recommend keeping. I still need to spend a few hours wiring up my racetronix fuel pump harness. I've been kinda lazy, and I hate dealing with electrical. I wasn't comfortable doing the fuel pump, but its 10X easier than what I thought it would be.

The white plastic "bucket" that the fuel pump slides into. You have to separate the two halfs. My Racetronix kit came with a strong model glue that you use to bond the pieces back together. If you don't know what I'm talking about, its not a big deal if you don't have it anymore. You just don't want to run your tank past 1/4 full. The fuel bucket keeps the pump covered in fuel, so it kept cool. Otherwise you are going to overheat your pump, and over time it will fail.

I used this site for reference. It was tons of help.

Drop the tank don't cut the door. your risking a lot cutting the door and with dropping the tank its not difficult at all. I just did mine... you'll break a bolt and get mad or crack a socket.. but buy a new bolt get a new socket and do it that way. Hit all your bolts with p-b plaster... you'll do fine... it can be done with jack stands.

                  Fuel Pump

Well, I just got home from Plainwell, went to get several things. But since I left my cash at home I returned empty handed. I did look at Dremmel tools @ Home Depot, I would need to drive to 54th & 131 to get the one I want. Went to mail box and my new F/P arrived. I'm pretty geeked up now that I have replacement unit. I think I'll cut the access hole and get it done yet tonight.

Just be careful cutting the whole. I want to say you have about 1/2 an inch of clearance between the lines and the top of the sheet metal. If It were me I would cut the bottom of the panel and peel it up so you can see the lines. Then cut the top part when you see how much room you have.

I think any plastic modeling glue will work. That stuff melts the plastic together.
