  • Caught a Case of LT1

Well, Ive owned my baby nearly 5 years now and i must say that i am lucky to have gone this long without problems.... but I defintely got them now. Ive had some stumbling at low RPMs for a while now, and i figured i would install my wideband to help me troubleshoot the problem. Well, got myself a whole mess now. It made that stumble about 10x worse. Ive spent all day trying to figure things out and all ive done is suck down 7 gallons of gas in 60 miles running diagnostics and watch more problems appear out of thin air.

At the end of the day i know the source of one problem - the "narrowband simulation" is a total joke. im going to be undoing that setup tomorrow and that should solve a good portion of the bucking and backfiring. (the problem disappears in open loop)

I probably wont have it at woodward tomorrow, because it is running TERRIBLE.

oh i will get it figured out its just a matter of when. Datamaster and tunercat are awesome... i can see exactly whats going on (a freggin nightmare )

The biggest problem right now is my perspective: Ive had two weeks off of work. Ive spent those entire two weeks working on the car, in addition to 450 dolllars in maintenance stuff i didnt expect to need, and now i got this.

Cammy is sitting her *** in the driveway tonight, shes a bad girl thats spoiled rotten.

...actually thats definitely the case. I should have it at woodward tomorrow, i just wont have the wideband working.

We'll see. spark plug wires could still be a culprit in all this and i might even have a fouled plug or two from trying 20 different failed solutions.

Last I checked, the plugs for an LT1 were a little more than $20. . . I had to pay $45 to change the plugs on my LT1 in my Roadmaster.

Funny you mention this...I'm chasing similar gremlins.

Began last fall when at a steady RPM it would occasionally buck and stumble.

First guess was fuel filter...pulled it and it was nasty...replaced it, and it helped the problem, but it didn't go away. Put it away for the winter.

This spring, it's still there, and now I'm thinking a fouled injector.

Ran some Seafoam through it, and again, it helped, but did not eliminate the problem.

Next, we replaced all the plugs.

And that's where we're at due to various stages of de-construction.

If plugs don't fix it (they all looked good coming out, so I doubt it's plugs), then we'll do plug wires.

I'm guessing it's a bad wire at this point.

yep thats what im chasing. I have to cruise around in 4th gear right now to keep it running smooth (2500 rpm), which is just enough to keep it out of closed loop.

for the record Jeff - this problem began when i installed my new taylor spark plug wires. Since then it has gotten better and worse with several changes, just like yours. im going to try to figure out how to disable closed loop so i can see if if i still have the problem without the oxygen sensors messing things up... which is whats happening right now with the wideband sending BS data. Ive been thinking it was my plug wires all along, but it baffles me that the problem disappears in open loop, and runs great from 2500-5800 RPM.

IIRC i paid about $5 a pop for the plugs last time... so that would be about right nick.
