  • Oil Change Light

I just bought my car like 3 weeks ago and now for some reason my oil change light is coming on? i drive it for a few mins and it goes off, i also added a quart of oil today. Is there any reason why it would be doing this? i dont think the dealership would have overlooked that and not changed the oil but idk???

My car randomly does that every now and then, I leak like two or three drops of oil every day from where the timing cover meets the oil pan (atleast I think that's what my dad said, hell if I should know, I leave the engine stuff to him right now lol) so I just add a quart and it turns off.

it could be a low oil condition. Just make sure you car has full oil. If that ain't the prob someone on this board should have a code reader. It could tell you whats going on.

if it doesn't leak use some mobil 1. Pick it up at walmart in the 5qt jug. Its cheap! If it does leak I use Valvoline but thats my 2cents

I'm gonna change mine with Mobil 1 soon, but. . .
I have a PCM scanner, I could take it on a diagnostic run at the meet and greet if you want, I had to do it in my mom's aurora yesterday. That'll tell you whats wrong with it!

Never had that problem. But have had some lights come on in other GM's. Go to autozone have them run scanner on it. Use any oil besides quaker state. voila problem solved. It could also be that you need an oil change. Those oil changes will work wonders when it is least expected.
Do the cheap stuff first before dropping any cash. Thats my $.02

If there is actually a problem with the car it will save the code until you flash the memory on your Car's pc. So even if it goes off you should still be able to read it on a scanner.

The oil has to CIRCULATE in the engine. The oil doesn't reach the sensor when it is not running. All the oil goes down, then after a few minutes when it's warmed up and oil is circulating it goes off. Thats my guess. Theres this stuff that helps coat the inside of your engine. Look into it!

your car needs to reset the settings, must be it was reset after the cars last oil change. My friends Grand Prix did the same thing until he reset it. He did something with turning the key on/off a couple times and junk. I forget how it went.

To get lights like that on other cars (Not F-Body but still GM) you have to do something weird like press the brake or gas pedal down 5 times then start it. On my Crown Vic the Check Engine light would come on right before I started it, so I unhooked the battery for a couple days and it stopped showing up (It's a '90).

I would not assume your dealership did anything right, I've learned the hard way.

Sounds like your engine's oil change calculator has not been reset, which needs to be done when the oil is changed (I did forget once, and it came on like 7,000 miles later). The oil calculator uses data like engine temp, revs, starts, etc to calculate when your oil is overdue for replacement.
To reset correctly for each vehicle, just mlook in your owner's manual under "oil change" - it should be one of the last steps in that procedure. (I know, reading the directions is cheating, but tough).
I still change my lubricant (mobil 1 or Royal Purple) when I want, and don't wait for the calculator to tell me so.

Hey man, mine does the same thing. Ive changed the oil(mobil-1) and replaced the filter with that bullshit K&N high performance w/e. Anyways, my light still does the same thing, I think that there is some way to reset it and im trying to figure it out, Ill let you know if I do.
