  • anyone added a hypertech program to a 96 auto camaro

    I recently added BBK shorty headers, a K&N cold air kit, I have an air foil and a lt4 knock module to add and laslty a 160 degree thermostat and a hypertech power programmer. my question is the shift points you can change them I believe there is a way to just make shift firmness better but also they ask to chang the speed at which you shift gears. this is on a 96 auto z28. has anyone done this if so was there much difference. thank you Allen

    I've done it on a '99. You can increase shift firmness in +25% increments. The shift points are adjustable in +/- 1 mph increments. However I believe you question was do you have to adjust both, not on my '99 with the HPP3. So yes, both are adjustable independently.

      cool, I was thinking on just increasing firmness and leaving changing the shift speed alone for now. Allen

        I wouldn't waste your money on one. Having an auto and being able to adjust shift firmness is nice. Otherwise the Hypertech programmer is junk for a LT1. I noticed a huge difference when I installed my OBD1 computer with a mail order tune compared to the Hypertech programmer. The only difference I noticed was a slightly better idle speed, and better fan operating temps with the Hypertech. You can get a whole new computer with a tune for cheaper than the Hypertech programmer bought used.

          Agreed to a point, you have to be careful with mail order tunes. I would recommend if you want a good tune to take it to a shop with a chassis dyno that has a good reputation. However, while the hypertech Programmer tuning really isn't worth it, I found the other features for the $100 mine cost me well worth the money. Being able to change shift points, shift firmness, re-calbrate gearing & tire/wheel size changes so the speedo reads right, fan temp, rev limiter and so on without having to take it anywhere a great thing.

          I had mine set at +50% most of the time, I just liked the hard shifts. Are you going to change the Rev Limit? If so you may still want to change the shift points too. Reason being the shift points are actually changed only at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). I lowered mine on my '99 (I don't like revving over 5500 RPM with stock valvetrain) so I had to back down the shift MPH because it would bounce off the limiter and not shift at WOT. So if you change the rev limit, you may have to adjust the shift point.

          Also, DO NOT shift into 4th/OD on a 700R4/4L60E at WOT, it has a weaker clutch/band and will wear prematurely causing you to lose your OD gear.

            x2. Hypertech did nothing for me.

            the shift firmness did not seem to make a difference either, only the mph

              well since I already bought it I added the hypertech and the thermostat today on top of adding headers and cold air kit lst wek and everythings feels great, the shift firmness is nice and the car runs great so all in all I am happy, I still have the knock module and air foil comming this week so I will add those also. thank you Allen

                while were on the topic is lt1 edit the only tuneing program for lt1's besides standalone units?

                  Ive been thinking about getting a hypertech tuner to mess around with. How do you like it? Worth the money?

                  Also not to get off of topic, but where is the best place to order a tune??

                      your better off getting a mail order tune, or a real tunning program. they are good for gear or tire changes relly

                          I dont know about anybody else but I added mine today and really notice a difference I like it and it was easy, I bought it new, others may disagree this is just my opinion, I lso added cold air kit, 160 thermostat, headers. allein the same week. cars runs much better. Allen

                              bolt ons hypertech is probably ok

                              i had a cam, and went with a mail in tune and it really woke the car up.

                              I'm sure a dyno tune would have been better
