Fixing a rod

i know its hard to say without tearing stuff apart but what is involved with fixing a rod knock?

does the complete engine need to be rebuilt?

the car has only been ran with the knock for about probably 5ish min of actual run time

you might be able to get away with just replacing the rod bearings. You have good oil pressure so your mains should be fine.

The culprit is usually cylinder number 8. If you arent so lucky, the crank and rod themselves could be damaged too. This is usually what most people have to replace, but if the car hasnt been run much since it happened, you might be OK.

What car is this on?

you'll have to pull the motor more than likely. Unless you can get the pan off and have room to get at the rods but I wouldn't count on it.

its the 95 formula... he is yanking the motor, putting the roadmaster engine in it and keeping this one.

and yea, its nearly impossible to do engine-in-car in a 4th gen.

You are wasting breath even asking cause it's completely impossible to say until you take it apart and find out what caused the failure to begin with.

And the oil pan won't come off because the K-Member is in the way and you can't get low enough to claer te oil pump.

You need to pull it to do it right but it sounds like that's what you are going to do any how.

It can be done in car. I changed an oil pan in car. You need an engine hanger or cherry picker to raise the engine a little

not necessarily.. Lifting the engine in the car is practically the same ammount of work if you are disconnecting the trans.

i personally would not mess with it inside the car whether its doable or not.

x2 the pan does come off in the car. however if you're trying to do anything past taking the pan out, yank the motor it's easier.

how is anyone owned? why would you want to change rod bearings in the car when you have the tools to make life easier like Adam does? and both people that have gotten their oil pans out have LS1s. Thats besides the fact that this engine is NOT going back into the same car, therefore its coming out anyway. Why would he change bearings in the car, for the fun of it??
