cheap or not... i wouldnt wanna go through the work of a cam swap for such a small power gain. but to each their own. depending on the springs you go with youre going to need hardware as well - locks, retainers, etc.

If we know what you want specifically we can give you better reccomendations. I for one don't understand why your looking into a rebuild or new engine ? What's wrong the one you have ?
My `98 has 120K and it still runs great it may not be as strong as it used to be, but it hasn't lost that much. I'm in the process of replace/upgrading all the worn out stuff like Brakes Shocks/suspension Clutch etc... so the engine is pretty much last on my list (unless something happens). Even still plenty of people have added Cams to engines with far more mileage than mine and had Zero problems.
The LS6 is not a bad cam but for the effort of doing the swap you could get a much better cam and make more power without any driveability issues. Hell even the GMPP Hotcam or ASA cam will net better power use the same springs as the LS6 and still be reliable.

i'm probably getting a lower mile LS1 for pretty cheap and looking for a T56
all this stuff will be for down the road next fall or so
my LS1/a4 has 190xxx miles on it, still runs good though but for the price i can get this LS1 i cant go wrong getting a backup engine with 150xxx less miles than it
eventually this Z will be a DD/winter car so i want it to get stock or nearly stock gas mileage, reliability, etc
I plan on getting a nice newer SS or GTO or C5 in a few years

Even an LPE GT2-3 would give you better gains over an LS6 cam and near stock driveability. Jeff put down 350RWHP threw an unlocked stalled auto with that cam. IMO putting an LS6 cam in a car is like someone swapping from a 97-00 LS1 cam to a 01-02 because its a little bit "bigger". You could see better gains with just bolt ons at this point.

I'm telling you something like a 224/224 .563/.563 112 is a very proven cam and you will not be disipointed. SS4Matt put down 395RWHP cam only with this cam. And he DDed his car for over a year like that I believe.

yea i was asking because i found that comp w/ 9K miles on it for $100
If I had a bigger budget I would go the route everyone is recommending but i'm trying to go with whats available to me and figured you guys were right not to go w/ LS6 if i'm going to be putting time into it

remember all the peak power and drivability is in a solid tune so make that you top priority once this all comes together.Doing less with more

Yea I have time, I'll keep my eyes open for the right one at the right price
so I guess my main concern isn't "driveability" but gas mileage...i dont care if it lopes like a som ***** but i would like to get 20+ MPG (combined cty/hwy) for sure
thanks for all the advice

I don't think the SSR intake will fit its too damn big, and if your really concerned about mpg just get a T-56 they will untimatly get better mpg in all situations.Doing less with more

yea I had a T56 lined up but it sold before i could get the cash around
I can get my hands on everything except the trans for free so its still an option, but I hate to spend $1K+ on a transmission when my A4 is still good
(yea I'm cheap as hell if you havent noticed)
