  • Couple Questions about the auto transmission

One thing Nicole always complains about is the transmission. The only thing that is really modified on the car is 3.73 gears, k&n cai, new muffler, and (maybe) the hp tune is turned on. From a dig though at WOT the car shifts funny. It will shift long before redline, it will up shift, then downshift, then re up shift again for no real reason. Could this be caused by the gears or the tune?? I'm not sure if the tune is on or not though. She says it's not, her dad says he couldn't find how to turn it on. I haven't had a chance to check yet.

My other question is are there any 5-speed trannys that bolt right up?? How much would something like that kind of swap cost. She really wants a 5 speed automatic.

    Thanks guys!!

well there is no tune that typically turns on and off.... a tune is normally programed into the ecu there for it is always like that but i doubt that would cause it to shift funny like that.

As far as I'm to understand the HP Tuner just has a boxed tune on it that you either turn on or turn off. Usually tunes do tweak your transmission shift points. I'm just wondering if their tune sucks so bad that it could be causing this. I don't think switching out the gears would really cause the transmission to freak out like that. Never heard of it. I just want the tranny to hold until the redline every shift and it doesn't do that.

          Sounds electronic to me.

          Is it the "tune" module?

Depends on what else the ol' "tune" module changes...

Well if it is, don't be shifting into 4th at WOT, the overdrive isn't made to handle WOT shifts. You'll burn 4th right up.

I agree with Jeff, somethings making that kick in and out. If the gears were changed and the computer wasn't re-calibrated for them that could mess it up too.

are you talking hp tuners or something like a hyper tech. Hypertech you can change shift points+/- mph with or without changing the engine cal.

LOL, you're right. That's what she has. I always think HP tuner because that's what I'm used to with my car. But yeah, hypertech is what I'm talking about. The funny thing though is that it's not consistent. It doesn't always do it. It sometimes shifts at 4,000 rpms, and sometimes shifts at redline.

Whoever said something about shifting into 4th at WOT I'm a little confused. The tranny is doing it itself. She's just leaving it in Drive and it shifts on it's own to 4th. It should hold out until redline at every shift.

Do you guys normally hand shift it when racing??

I think this will need to be something I mess with in the spring and get calibrated for her. This seems like the issue though is the shift point calibration from the hypertech unit.

The hypertech also has a boxed tune right?? Any good at all or kinda a waste of time??

Ok first off if its a hypertech it needs to have the gearing changed that is probably your problem. If the car still thinks it has 3.23s and you swapped in 3.73s and didn't reprogram it then you will have shifting issues. Secondly there are no 5 speed autos that I know of at all only 6 speed and they don't have the same bolt pattern, buy a T-56 if shes wants more gears to bang. Also never shift a 4l60e yourself its meant to do it all by itself, let it.

Yeah..if you changed gears you need to reprogram it or it WILL be messed up when shifting. Hypertech has provisions for non stock gears. You can change the shift firmness and shift points based on mph. You have to test it and play with it to find the best shift points. I had tweaked mine for what I thought they should be(on my V6). Then I took it to the track and found it was shifting too quick on the lower gears so I had to redo my shift points. I kept playing with them till I was happy where it was shifting while going down the track. Also if the trans is slipping it might be the cause of what you're seeing.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. I'll mess with it in spring and see what's up. Hope it's not a slipping tranny. Her dad manually shifts it when he drives because that's why he thinks it's there.

Hopefully I can get it figured out though.

Just because you manually move the shifter doesn't always mean it's going to shift then. It's not a sequential clutchless auto, it's just a regular auto! The computer will still tell it when to shift. You'll actually be slower trying to shift it yourself than just leaving it in drive and mashing the pedal.
