  • LT1 Guys I need a favor

    Anyone have a LT1 w/ LT's and ORY?

If you could get some measurements for me it would be greatly appreciated.

I need to know how far back the ORY goes (where it ends and connects to the rest of the exhaust. Looking for the front to back measurements. Make of the LT's and ORY would be nice too.

Doesn't matter where you measure it from as long as it's a common reference point and is NOT from the header collectors and you tell me what that reference point is. Doesn't need to be exact but semi-accurate.

I have the setup you describe, however i just cut my I-pipe in a random spot and had a flange welded on. the y-pipe is custom so the length didnt matter.

I dont have the car here to give you a measurement but i dont think it would do you any good anyway.

here are pictures of my setup though if it helps.... im actually planning on getting it redone because i dont like the angle it comes together at

ok thats what I'm doing, pretty much what mine will look like. Just bought a 3" LS1 cat-back but I am going to cut the 45 degree spipe bend off it so it goes straight from the ypipe (deleted cat).

I need to buy some 3" piping to connect my (future) ORY to the cat-back and was seeing how much I needed to get.

      here's a picture:

(I don't have enough money to get the ORY so I'm attaching it temp. for now)

Im not really understanding what you need.... perhaps you could clarify? from the illustration it looks like you could just buy a 2-3 foot section of pipe and cut it down to fit

LT1s didnt have that S-pipe angle to my knowledge.

do you plan on mating it with a y-pipe supplied by the header company? its probably not what you want to hear but i would advise against that.

I probably should have said this in the 1st post but I don't have my car right now so I can't go out and see how things are, so I was going to order 3" piping but didn't know approx. how much I'll need.

Maybe I need to ask this question first...

Where does a ORY dump the exhaust?

Would where it exit of the ORY be 'inline' with the I pipe?

this picture is about the best i can help you:

as you can see my flange is just behind that flimsy driveshaft safety crossmember, which is where i cut my i-pipe. if i had to guess, the pre-fabbed ORY you are getting is going to meet up just ahead of that.... cant give you an exact spot though, maybe someone else can.

However again, id strongly advise you get a custom y-pipe. You will understand why when you try to install the pre-fabbed one... especially if its a slip-fit pipe. flanges are "FTW" for lack of a better term.

Did you make that yourself? It looks like it fits up there nice

I'm searching around for a used ORY, but may piece one up and have my dad weld it for me...and my friend has the hook-ups for dynomax mandral bends so that may be a good option for me

Here's the story on my y-pipe... i had it custom made originally with cats. however one of the cats failed after just 2 months and i wasnt going to spend another $80 on a replacement so i had them cut. So the y-pipe was designed to fit cats, which is why it has such crappy angles... It does tuck up extremely well, i have no clearance issues whatsoever. you will definitely have more clearance issues with a pre-fabbed Y.

I would highly advise making your own y-pipe if you have the resources to do it. You can avoid all kinds of problems that way. Clearance is REALLY BAD on the driver side behind the collector (in the sense that the collector dumps straight into a frame rail). Mine is made out of 2.5" for that reason, however 2.5 is plenty sufficient. If youre welding it up yourself you can also fab up a nice merge section which helps horsepower and exhaust note. The way mine is crashing together right now makes the exhaust rasp, which is why im going to get it redone.

edit: I also forced that driver side framerail up about 3/4" wiht a floor jack to gain some clearance. Even with 2.5" pipe and that adjustment my y-pipe will hit the frame if my clutch goes into a chatter spell.

hope that helps, good luck man its all worth it!

                  thanks for the help

I get my car back tomorrow, and my cat-back on sunday so I'm eager to get things going, at least make a temp. system until i can afford LT's

Based on what you said, I think I'm going to buy some exhaust tubing, 45 (or various) mandral bends to make it smooth and i'll have to find a piece that forms the Y

My friend might be able to get me dynomax bends at cost so it should still be a pretty cheap Ypipe (and better based on what you've said)

so you used 2.5" pipes for the Ypipe, what size header collector outlets do you have?

I was planning on getting 3" but would bottle neck be an issue if I reduced it down to 2.75" (using stock 2.75" I pipe for material)

my collectors are 3" ... I used reducer flanges at the beginning of the y-pipe. if you look at the pictures you can see its not much smaller at all... you probably didnt even notice it if you looked at the pictures already.
