  • 220K+ Miles

    Ok I have over 220K on my car

    Its been around the block a couple times and I want it to keep running good on me unlike it has been so..

    What are some things I should get done to it like alternator, belts, etc

    Right now

    1) Changed Plugs , Wires
    2) Oil has been changed
    3) Front Brake Pads/Calipers were changed

    :::::::EDIT::::
    4) Changed thermostat
    5) Airfilter
    ::::::::::::::::::

    What else should I be doing?

    The body has over 220K...The motor had to be swapped for another 3.4...I 4got how many miles were on itbut I think it was 150k or something not sure

    I don't know what you've gone recently so it's hard to say but I would go through and check all this stuff....

    -Oil/Oil Filter
    -Flush Transmission (if auto, trans filter change)
    -New PCV Filter
    -Air Filter
    -Spark Plugs/wires
    -Rear gear oil
    -Check front and rear brakes. Replace as necessary. If nothing else completely flush the system with new brake fluid.
    -Belts
    -Thermostat and Coolant
    -Lube all hindges and locks

        The only thing I wouldn't do .............

        Trans flush ,I've been told ..you can have more problems by doing that.It loosen particles up that later could cause problems....Just drain & refill........so I've been told ??

          Well since you started this thread I assume you plan on keeping your car alive for a few more years.

          1. Clean the car inside and out, lube the all the hidges like someone said before
          2. I would get an alignment with a PRINTOUT and make sure the ball joints, tie rods, and wheel bearings are all good.
          3. Check for any leaks and consider fixing (radiator, rear end, motor, trans, power steering)
          4. I would change the coolant, rear end lube, and consider trans fluid (?????)
          5. maybe consider doing an auto-RX cycle very popular at bobistheoilguy.com (addative added to oil that is suposed to clean the internals and help with power and comprssion)
          6. If the current belt isn't cracking, squeaking or falling apart I wouldn't replace it.
          7. Have the battery checked to make sure volts and CCA are acceptable. My battery was 6 years old and my voltage was good but the CCA were below rating. It never gave me a problem but I wan't going to wait until it started giving me problems.
          6. It is good to replace your feul filter once and while. I do mine every 30K
          7. Like any car you drive check your oil once and while, maintain proper tire pressure, fill windshield fluid etc.

                I'm a student up at Ferris State in the Auto Program and we spent like a week on Myths like that. Sort of an auto related Mythbusters if you will.... They try and scare consumers by saying that but in all truth that only happens to 1 out of like ever 10,000 high mileage trans flushes. The trans shop would rather lose 20 trans flush jobs instead of cover one $2000 fix.

                Forgot those two...my bad

                Like I said in my post, check everything and change as needed after inspection.
