  • Fuel Questions...

I'm replacing the fuel pump on my 94 TA LT1

I cant find the "test-port" to relieve fuel pressure...what would happen if i just unbolt the gas-tank top w/o relieving the pressure?

Also, I have gas in the tank now, approx 8 gallons, do I need to drain this gas?

I can't seem to wiggle my syphon hose down into the gas tank, it keeps getting stuck on something and wont reach any of the gas so what are other ways to drain the tank if necessary?

back of your fuel rail is the test port.

You can also remove the gas cap to relieve pressure.

Why not do the trap door method for the pump? A lot easier and helps later on down the road if a hose comes off or whatever to get back in there

i took off the gas cap, is that good enough?

and yes, the i am using the "trap door" method (if you mean go thru the trunk instead of dropping the whole tank right?

If doing that, i do not have to drain the gas right?

you do not have to drain the gas, just be careful not to drop anything in there though. I did mine with just under a 1/2 tank of gas.

fuel pump is in and i can hear it turning on...

I cranked it 4-5 times but it didn't fire...i'm assuming it would take awhile for the gas to get back into the system?

BTW, you cannot relieve the fuel pressure in the line by simply removing the gas cap. Either relieve it through the test port or just let it sit for awhile, it will bleed off on it's own back through the pump.

Is that only on LT1s cuz it definitely works on the 3.8.

Nope thats on all. The only think your doing by removing the gas cap is letting pressure out of the tank (Think gas can that has been sitting in the sun awhile), not the lines. Only way to remove the pressure off of the line is thru the test port or as james said let it sit a while it will bleed off.

No offense but I also think hacking a whole in your floor to change the fuel pump is the wrong thing to do. It does take that much longer to do it right.

There was already the hole cut, so i just cut thru the bondo they used to seal it and had instant access...

However, I installed the pump and a new filter but it still wont start...

when putting the new filter on, i cranked it to see if gas was coming out the hose and nothing came out...

i think i put the wrong hose on the fuel pump? because there was two hoses, one black rubber, one clear plastic...i chose the rubber, is that the return/feed? anyone know?

LOL Gary....I hear ya. If I ever bought a F-body only to find out later that some guy hacked a hole in it to change the fuel pump I would hunt him down and kick him square in the nuts.
