  • LT1 and 4.10's

Is there any way to tell what gear ratio I have?

94 TA A4 LT1, I was told that the car has 4.10's but is there any way to confirm this?

Also, is there anyway I can tell if the engines internals are stock or aftermarket? Cam etc...I know what a big cam sounds like but the more subtle ones I'm not sure how to identify if it's stock or not...any clues to help me out?

jack the back end up, put it in nuetral, spin the driveshaft and count its revolutions for every time the tire rotates. You should count approx. 4.1 revolutions.

^ yep ^ what tom said. for the cam tho you can't tell by looking at anything. I'd say park you car next to someone who has a stock car like yours and listen to them at idle or put your hand behind the exhaust tips to feel which one has the greater duration. That or take apart your top end. haha. This probably didn't help you at all.

Ok, I can do the driveshaft thing easy...

I dont know anyone with an LT1 actually, I've driven a V6 for the last year and a half and forgot how a V8 runs but this one rumbles, but then again, it has a high flow exhaust...so it's hard to tell...but the hand over exhaust does help, thanks!

          1 wheel rotation = about 3 and 1/3 driveshaft rotations...so it's either got 3.23's or 3.42's then right?

yep (which is much more believable than 4.10s)

It's probably got 3.42's. Look at the RPO codes either on the inside edge of the driver's door above the latch, or inside the glove compartment. It will be GU#. The # will tell which gear ratio you've got. Post up here when you find the code, tell me what it says, and I'll tell you which ratio it is.

                    X3 - Look for a GU5 code on the door, that's the 3.23 gear code. I believe GU2 is 2.73.

                      my current 98 z28 a4 came with 3.42's stock
(or maybe not? but i have them in the garage.)
It now has a set of 3.73's in it....

                      my first 98 z28 a4 had the 3.23.
and this one did not, hrmmm?
