Oil questions

Ok, looking for some input on the oil in my car. I run 5w-30 Mobil with an oversized WIX filter, and change it every 3000 or less. My most recent change was 2500.

Even at only 2500 miles, my oil seemed awfully dark, so my instinct was to immediately change it. Since i bought the car, the oil always seemed to get dirty fast. The cylinder heads look clean as can be and the car runs strong as hell so i dont think there is anything wrong with it. Ive been told this is normal but im still skeptical. i use the same stuff in my truck (nearly the same engine) and that oil wont look dirty until 3500 or so. Obviously my car gets driven a harder than my truck, so im sure that accounts for some of it.


The other thing i am considering is switching to a thicker oil since my engine now has 90k on it. perhaps 10w-30 or 10w-40. My oil pressure is usually 15-20/35-45. It might get close to 50 at WOT. input?

I run 10w30 mobile 1 in everything my truck has 200k on it, the gp has 130k (GTP sc) if your not using oil don't worry about going to a thicker oil. Dirty oil doesn't mean a whole lot except that teh detergents are working. You probably have a bit of blowby or maybe running a bit rich (do you have a cold tstat? that makes it run a bit richer and will make the oil look dirty faster)

this is what my dad was thinking as well. i have a 160 stat and yes the car does run really cool. about 180 degrees at cruise. when the car is cold it blows black condensation out the muffler (it stains the garage floor).

i didnt think it could be running too rich though, it gets great gas mileage and runs really strong.

I supposed i should look into tuning it? im still trying to find a computer that will work with the stupid thing.

The motor is about to blow, you should sell it quick before it's too late. I'll take it off your hands at a discounted rate of coarse.

I wouldn't worry about ti too much...you are likely running it a little rich. The color isn't as much of a concern as the viscosity......how does it look and feel when you drain it? Does it seem overly thin?

Just cuz its dark doesnt mean its dirty. It means its doing it job dark usually means heat

the 160 t stat makes it run rich (it makes the computer stay in warm up mode and dump more gas) I run a standard tstat in my car and it stays 195 at idle and cruise in the 100 degree heat here in Alabama, and gets 24 mpg with a supercharger (when it had a 160 stat it got 18 mpg and run around the 180 mark)

it does come out thin, but thats likely only because i always go out and get it hot before i drain the oil (to make it thin). It comes out like water, but it should after a WOT run.

Im really gonna try to find a laptop to tune this thing with, im pretty sure its running rich. ...which also means i have more aych-pee's to unleash!!!

you should still be fine joel, i use 15-40 in mine just b/c its diesel oil with the zinc in it yet

Id better warn my dad about this API bs, he uses regular dino oil in all of our other 3 vehicles.

Hmm, I didn't get that take from it...I think Mobil 1 is still o.k.
