  • convertible top problems

I never owned a convertible top car before till the 68 I am restoring. The guy I got the car from said it had a new top, but the guy wrapped the tack strip with duct tape then stapled the top to it. I figured this was because he couldnt a new tack strip. So I replaced it. I went to adjust the top .(Now the top was not on the car when I bought it it was wrapped in a blanket).and when I folded it I pushed it down and proceeded to put 2 holes in the outside of the sail panel. At the time I thought they might have been there. But when I folded the top and pressed it down the 2nd time and ended up with 2 more holes I relized it was me who did it.The culprit was where the inner and outer wheelwell panels are seemed together there is a rise and a hole along the seam. the top of the seam where the hole is ,is what caused it because it is higher then the rest of the seam because of the hole . I hammered it flat to be flush with the rest of the seam but the top is still ripping in other areas along the sail panel. Is the seam on the wheelwells on a convertible supposed to be flat? meaning horizontal not verticle?.I replaced both so I dont know!.Also the hydraulic pumps are not hooked up .Am I pushing the top too far down? I need a new top and before I put it on I need this problem fixed.please help

Do you have a well liner that your top goes into? This should also keep the top from going down to far. I posted some photos on your other post.

Look up a local uhpolstery shop, they should be able to repair it. Good luck, Eric L

Hammered down the raised seam flat yesterday. but broke the welds holding the 2 together. So I will have to weld from the bottom them back together. I cant wait to get this car done.

That sucks. Seems like whenever you fix something on an old car, something else breaks.
