While at work today a friend who runs a CNC machine that is presently machining L86 heads showed me a new machine tool. It was a sculpted cutter to cut the bowl area of the cylinder heads. From the size it was for the intakes. Looks like these are going to be essentially bowl ported via CNC, at least the protypes we're working on. These are the DI (direct injection) versions. One plunge cut and the bowl work is done. Looked like the cutter will also be machining the valve guide hole at the same time. Wham bam, thank you ma'am.

I can't even imagine how much money is tied up into that cutter. They obviously had to hand port a head then make the cutter to fit. My mistake, its for the L86 heads only, not the L83, but both are going to be direct injected. The heads and ports on the heads look the same, but the L86 has a little different shaped combustion chamber and bigger valve sizes. When in doubt, Whip it out !
