Poor underhood finish and paint mismatch

I was disappointed in the overall fit and finish of the fifth gen cars at the meet and greet. The paint under the hood on the hinges, shock towers and core support is pretty sad. The paint is flat, not even satin, no clear at all and the hinges looked like they had been paint with a paint brush.

The orange metallic ones have an issue with the front covers not matching the fenders, poor color match. I know some of them are captured test fleet vehicles but for what they want for them a little more quality would be nice, especially if you are going to bring them out to show them off.

yeah for the price they really didn't impress me, but i don't think i've ever seen a gm car have a glossy engine bay stock.

I agree on how poor the underhood paint looked. I understand that they dont spray clear for most cars under the hood. The underhood paint was much lighter and looks very thin. I could have done better with a rattle can. Overall the car is great, but i really didnt like how cheap the underhood paint looked. It looks of the same quality as a g6 i looked at that was only 2 years old. It had a dozen rust spots on the underside of the hood, and around the shock towers. This worries me because even though the thing was driven in the snow it shouldnt have been showing that much rust under the hood.

one of many reasons I'd never own a 5th gen, among others.. the biggest thing that bothered me was they seemed like freaking boats out there next to our fourth gens. Massive body panels the whole way around the car. It does not seem sleek and refined at all. If I wanted a boat I'd buy a family car. I'll stick with my nice sleek 4th gen trans am mmk.

Well said! Their front sits about as high as my s10.. deff not a fan of the new 5th gens, I thought it was just me lol

I don't understand. Please do not take offense to this but why so much hostility towards the company that provided us with one of our greatest sources of enjoyment all these years? I know I did not work for GM nor did I lose a GM job, but every vehicle I have ever purchased was GM and for good reason. Because they are affordable, reliable, and cool!

I know many of you have complaints about the 5th gen, but if all that is wrong is poor panel fitment or underhood paint finish that that is something I can live with. Remember many people complained about the 4th gens, but look at how many people love those! We had almost 200 of them at the meet and greet all meticulously cared for and loved.

So I say thank you to GM! You have done many things to be proud of. Although I know this is a dark time please work to come out stronger because of the hardship you face.

Just my $0.02. Not directed at anyone in particular just noticed the general demeanor of this thread.

No offense taken but GM needs to realize that one of the many complaints over the years was fit and finish. I worked there for the last 14 years so I have seen a lot of the crap that they pushed out the door.

My biggest beef is when you walk up to a car it should have a quality, finished, professional look to it. For $38,000 or whatever they are running, I expect more. I hope the GM reps that brought the cars read this post and take some of the criticism to heart. It is not meant to slam them but it is the opinion from past and future customers if the "New GM" wants to survive.

It doesn't cost that much to spray some clear under the hood, after all, a robot is already there spraying the rest of the body. I know they try to cut every nickel from a build to save piece price and build cost but quality should come before a oversized plastic engine cover. Now there is some cost cutting they could do.

And thats exactly it. The clear coat is pealing, literly PEALING off my grand prix already. Its a 2004 and probally wasnt taken care of but that doesnt matter, a 4 year old car should have any clear coat problem besides scratches/normal wear and tear. My car also has rust. Because of these problems, I will not buy a GM car again. That is the direct fault of poor design/quaility and nothing else. I like my cars and they have provided to be reliable but the consumer can only give so much.

Exactly - a lot of the other generations were not show cars from the factory...far from it. I didn't even notice all these little issues - and it wouldn't stop me from buying the car. I probably wouldn't buy a 2010, but I'll buy one soon enough... People - these cars have only been out for a few months, pre-production cars or not, it's still bound to have a few kinks for a few months after you start producing the car...

The 5th gen isn't bad looking but I haven't taken the time to sit in one or anything.

Guess I'll have to check them out better when I see it.

Trans issues, battery cable, mis matched paint, ground effects...ya. For a company living on my tax dollars, I expect basic things, like battery cables, paint, and ground effects to be rock solid. The m6 trans issues for the V6...I can live with.

when I was gonna clear my engine bay I talked to alot of painters. They all said I couldn't just spray clear over it cause its not painted to begin with. They said is colored primer under hood and underbody.
That being said they would have to add a few more steps to do it correctly
