DETROIT — High dealer inventories and lower consumer demand have forced General Motors to temporarily close 13 of its 22 assembly plants in North America for multiple weeks this summer, cutting production by 190,000 vehicles, it said. However, GM said launch vehicle schedules will be "maintained" for several critical models, including the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Equinox and Cadillac SRX.
"The scheduling actions do not impact operations that are in the process of launching new products, including the all-new Chevrolet Camaro built at Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, and the Buick LaCrosse launching soon at the Fairfax, Kansas, assembly plant," GM said, noting that the Equinox and SRX were also spared in this latest action.
The automaker said that the dramatic step — far beyond the traditional two-week summer break for model change-over — will cut inventories from 767,000 vehicles now to 525,000 by the end of July.
"By reducing our inventories even more aggressively we reduce pressure on GM and our dealers, and set ourselves up well for a clean 2010 model year startup," said Troy Clarke, GM North America president, in a statement.
Industry observers worry that the shutdowns could mean the end for cash-strapped GM suppliers.
Inside Line says: They'll still be building Camaros, but not much else, this summer at GM plants in North America. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
