  • 1979 Trans am added to the family stable.

So I decided to pull the trigger, and bought my Dad's 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. The car has been in my family since 85, Dad has owned it for about 15 years. In that time, hes put about 500 miles on it, and it hasn't left the garage in three years. Despite that, we dropped a new battery in it, changed the negative battery cable, and she fired right up. She is a cold blooded BIATCH in the mornings. Either the carb doesn't have an automatic choke, or it isn't working. But once she warmed up, she was raring to go, though the idle is set WAY high.
    main.jpg
She IS a beauty though. Needs a good scrub down and polish after three years of storage. But she did have a cover on her, and was in a garage. T-topped of course.
    engine.jpg
Under the hood, we have the original 403 thats a little more than original. Has 70k on it, at 50k they modded it to include a hot cam, forged pistons, ported and polished heads, headers... all the goodies to make her move. Then dropped that POS carb back on top. Why? Maybe back then it worked right.
    side rear.jpg
No rust in the usual areas. Rockers are solid, pillars are flawless, trunk is rock hard. There are a few minor areas under the hood and along the underbody where the paint and rustproofing have started to flake, and some surface rust has just started. First stop will be to get that blasted off and re-rustproofed to keep it from doing any real damage. Frame is perfect.
    interior.jpg
Bleah. The only thing I don't like about this car... red interior. Luckily, interior parts for these cars are cheap and plentiful. I can redo the entire interior of the car for roughly what it would cost me to redo the seats in my 2000. Around $1800.
    crumble.jpg
The first sign of real trouble. The trunk lock was frozen up, so I pulled out the rear seat so I could pop it. I leaned against the side molding... and my hand went right through it. You can see the hole in the top left. The panels are so dry rotted, they are basically tissue paper with plastic powder on them. Good thing I didn't plan on keeping them anyway.
    rims.jpg
Rims and tires are in surprisingly good shape, given the car hasn't left the garage in three years. Need a good scrubbing and some polish, but they will look sweet when done. Who knows, maybe I can actually be a contender for a trophy or two next year at the Meet and Greet! I am a bit confused though. Dad says these are the original rims for the car. I didn't think they made Rally IIs in 79?
    spider.jpg
The custom artwork on the shaker. I'll probably end up either painting over it, or selling it on Ebay as a custom part and buying a new one. Not much for spiders, myself.

So whats next for her? First, a trip to the rust proofing booth, then a complete new interior in camel tan. I want to experiment with two toning it, kind of like my 2000. Eventually, it will get repainted. The black isn't the original paint, though it is the original color. I'd like to go with something like this.orange.jpg
A nice deep dark burnt orange. I always thought one of this generation Trans Ams would look sweet in that color.

If the shaker is in good shape, just repaint it...it's hard to find those things in good shape anymore...

Yep, you could get Rally IIs in '79...those center caps are for a third gen though...

And as a FYI, Quadrajets were one of the best carbs ever made. GM allowed an unlimited development budget for them and they roughly have half the number of parts in them that a Holley or Edelbrock does. They are just simply misunderstood and require some specific maintenance. Yeah, that flapper that looks to be about 10 degrees out of being flush? Yeah, it's engineered and supposed to be that way. They've just been demonized over the years by backyard hacks that didn't know what they were working with.

It wasn't offered in '79, but Carousel Red (essentially Orange) and Fiero Bronze (kind of what you're looking for) were offered in '80.

That's an attractive color combination, I'd just leave it and preserve the car's value if it were me, but bronze or orange would be sharp.

Not sure what kind of plastic that was that GM used in those interior panels back then, but it was clearly less durable that a milk jug!

I know what you mean Kevin, but since it already isn't the original paint, and the interior is literally falling apart, I figure any real original benefit has been lost already. Besides, I have no intention of selling it. Lol.

Thanks guys, really looking forward to playing with it a bit. I'm amazed after looking at parts for my 4th gen how much cheaper replacement parts are for a second gen!

Jeff, thanks for the info! I had no idea these ever came in a bronze color, I've never seen one. But that is pretty much the appearance I think I am going to go for. I love the color. As for the carb, I've never really had anything against quadrajet. I'm just surprised that this one is in such bad shape. Once I get the car back to my place, I'm going to pull all of the air cleaner off so I can get a better look at it, find the model number, and get a rebuild kit for it. Then I'm going to spend a couple of days reading up on how to rebuild one of these things. Should be fun. I've also toyed with the idea of just taking it off and replacing it with one of those EFI units they make for these. We will see.

Since the Q-Jet is really pretty bulletproof, and since your trademark shaker scoop sits on top of all that air and fuel induction apparatus, I don't think I'd be prone to monkey with an EFI on that car. Save your money, save your grief. You'll be spending more than enough money on paint and interior!

                        No problem, bud.

EFI can be done, but it's not just as easy as throwing one on.

Depending on which kit you go with, you'll likely need a new intake, fuel lines, fuel return line, big electric fuel pump (Holley Blue probably not big enough), and then check what vacuum advance you're running for the new tune. And you'll probably have to chop-up/fabricate a new air cleaner housing. While you're at it, I'd get the HEI distributor checked out and upgrade the plug wires.

Another idle random thought is that your dash looks pretty darn good...and that is the most expensive interior component...just sayin'...red is going to be cheaper to redo than trying to switch colors...

If you want the carb professionally rebuilt, I know a guy (former GMI instructor and actual mechanic at Royal Pontiac back in the day) that used to charge $300 to rebuild them. But that was about 5 years ago, we would have to double check for today. He's not local (Denver, CO), but I've watched him rebuild one in less than an hour.

                        It was terrifying.

Yeah, the dash LOOKS good, but its an illusion. If you look just above the right corner of the brushed aluminum, you can see a half inch wide crack. Theres another one by the right most vent, and the corner behind the steering wheel is cracked as well. As long as I'm replacing that, might as well go all out and do it the way I want. Really the only parts that are salvageable are the trim part plastics, and some of them are questionable. Headliner has shrunk WAY down, carpet is starting to fray, and the door panels are peeling. I'll get some better pics of the interior damage this next weekend. It would cost just as much to get the red "showcar" ready as it will to switch it to black and tan.
Yeah, you are probably right about the EFI, I was doing some research on them. What would you say is the "optimum" carb for a 403? It looks like a good replacement can be bought for anywhere from 250-600 depending on what CFM you want. I seem to remember 650 was "right" for a 400, but its been alot of years, so my memory may be off. Weighing replacing vs rebuilding. Dad says this carb isn't set up for automatic choke, I would really like to set one up if I can.

Under an hour???1 Shoot, looking at some of the threads, it would take me three to four days, and another week to tune it... at least.

One other neat part of the car... theres an old Clarion EQ mounted in the bucket under the radio. REALLY old-school.

                            Yeah, under an hour.

He had his speed wrenches out and I believe he was trying to make a point.

As the layers came off he was "Don't need this, don't need this, don't need this" and literally chucking parts over his shoulder. We're all taking a step back going "Uhm...aren't you going to need that later?"

                            "Nope".

This is back when I had a '68 Corvette and we had this guy fly into Detroit and had a symposium in Royal Oak for a weekend with 20 or so Corvette owners. He rebuilt and tuned four cars each day. The "rebuild" carb was in an hour, the "tune" the second hour, give or take. This is assuming the distributor did not need modification. Old cars, old problems.

It was actually so inspiring to me that I went out and purchased a digital timing gun to see where the car was at. And found out, to my chagrin, the timing was already set exactly to where it should have been.

I'd have to dig the calculations out of the closet, but Hot Rod once said that a 427 BB Chevy only "needed" 425 cfm for street duty, but that's probably very conservative.

650 is probably spot on for your usage. And you'll want an electronic choke, for sure.
