  • Almost a Mecham owner

I was hoping to be able to share some great pictures of our recent purchase and drive home via Route 66, but instead this is all I have........

A couple weeks ago I found a 1999 Mecham Formula that after several calls/good conversation with the dealership I decided to purchase. I gave them a deposit over the phone and arranged to drive down to Rogersville, MO friday to pick it up.

We get there and I didn't even have to get out of the car to see that it wasn't what I was told it was.

After looking the car over, driving it, looking it over some more I just couldn't bring myself to follow through with the purchase. There wasn't a body panel on the car that hadn't had previous body damage, the repair of which looked worse than some Maaco jobs I've seen. The drivers door had been replaced/resprayed, it's alignment was terrible, the repaint was sprayed right over the door moldings and was peeling off in areas revealing maroon paint underneath. The rear drivers quarter had more of a "wave" than some beauty queens do. The entire body had dents, scratches that weren't disclosed, and were beyond just a simple buff or PDR (paintless dent repair). The interior had heavy smoke scent (one of the things I asked about prior to giving the deposit, and was told "only a slight scent, nothing over powering"...), the T-top required the use of pliers to latch closed, the gauges all jumped up and down while idling, including the speedo. The brakes needed to be replaced, and the rearend had a growl coming from it. There was more, but you're getting the idea.......

I must say though the car sounded very good and amazingly it performed like a scawled cat, those two things alone almost made me reconsider. I really wish the car would've been in better shape, it could've been a fun vehicle to own. I'm officially a Mecham fan/believer.

So instead of some car & Route 66 photos here are some pics of only Route 66.......

Much of the old road has actually been covered up by the new highways, here's an example of such. If you look closely you can see the old road, if it still existed, would run right into I-44...

A four lane highway in the middle of nowhere, with no one driving on it.....

Pics from an area called Devil's Elbow....

Since we didn't buy a car we decided to make it a family vacation and spent the next day in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Very scenic....

Been there, done that. Drove to VA to check out a beautiful (in the pics) rolling chassis. Got there and the paint looked very similar to yours. Didn't help that I was stranded on the side of the road for 18 hours on that trip either. All you can do is chalk it up to experience and keep looking. Looks like a nice drive at least!

Thanks Jeff and yeah you're probably right at some point I'm gonna kick myself for passing on it, but right now I couldn't justify the cost to bring it back to "presentable" condition.

Thanks for the leads Gary......And yeah kinda sucks, but we turned into a family vacation, even took the kids to the top of the arch in St. Louis.
