  • My 383 Build

I started in October and finished it just before Christmas. The only things I did not do myself 100% is the engine build and transmission rebuild. For the engine I only wanted one pair of hands building the motor. The engine was built by Automotive Machine in Fraser. The transmission was built by a family friend with a shop somewhere in You Will Get Killed, Detroit.

Motor has a tad over 1k miles on it and so far so good. Once it was finished I drove it straight to Holland Michigan where I'm now currently living and working. Sadly, it's still the only car I have so I'm driving it in the winter. Thankfully with the XI2 tires and the 3600 stall it does really well in the snow, I'm just worried about everyone else.

Anyways, I can't wait for spring to take it to 131 and see what it runs. Yes, still have the good ol 10 bolt!

Which cam are you using for your 383? ... I would hate to drive mine in the winter, but I do have a Grand Am for that purpose.

Lloyd Elliot did the specs and it was ground by Comp Cam. Basically a slightly different XFI292:

      Lift Intake .585 Exhaust .580
      Duration Intake 242 Exhaust 248
      LSA 110

It's way too big for the heads I have but I knew that before I got it. I explained to Lloyd that I wanted something pretty radical because I'm going to be purchasing heads next year around this time and want to change as few parts as possible. Right now I have a set of heads that were hand ported and ran really well on a camed 350 nitrous car, made some nice numbers on the track. However, this cam is just too much for them, but it will work for now. The sound and feel of the car though is to die for. With the SLP LM1 the car was five times louder than when it was a 350 cam engine. I ended up buying two Borla XR1 Mufflers and proceeded to cut and weld them on the back Y of my current exhaust system with the LM1 resonator. It actually turned out really well and quieted down the car a lot. Now instead of loud ear piercing raspy sound it's an extremely low grumble, however, it shakes the windows in the house.
