  • Cool Heat Lightning Pictures

Well, it was heat lightning like crazy tonight on the way home from Angie's, so I quick pulled the camera out when I got home, switched the underbodies on, and started snapping away with the tripod. I took 116 pictures total, but here's the 15 pics that actually came out with some lightning in the background. The one with the visible bolt above my car is my favorite.

haha brian, i was out washing my car and i saw the clouds rolling in so i quick dried it off and grabbed my camera. However, soon found out my camera blows and black car at night=no go. Mine turned out VERY dark. Well done on yours! I assume you used some shutter to capture the lightning? Very good job. Here are the 3 best i got, very dark, also no lightning, just clouds due to my camera only having 4 sec shutter speed, no tripod, low ISO, and my mom screaming at me to come in so i didnt get struck, lol.

I sat there with my tripod sitting in the street while I snapped picture after picture. I took 116 pictures total, but those were the only ones that actually came out with the lightning in the background, the rest didn't get the shutter right because of the delay and all that fun crap with point & shoot digital cams. I like your pics tho, not bad at all, just gotta make the exposure longer so it will take brighter pics.

FYI....no such thing as heat lightning. You're just seeing lightning from a storm off in the distance. It was insane storms here last night. Tons of lightning all night and poured like crazy. At one point it was raining so hard I could barely make out my neighbors house about 40 feet away!

"Heat lightning or summer lightning Heat lightning (or, in the UK, "summer lightning") is nothing more than the faint flashes of lightning on the horizon or other clouds from distant thunderstorms. Heat lightning was named because it often occurs on hot summer nights. Heat lightning can be an early warning sign that thunderstorms are approaching. In Florida, heat lightning is often seen out over the water at night, the remnants of storms that formed during the day along a seabreeze front coming in from the opposite coast.
Some cases of "heat lightning" can be explained by the refraction of light or sound by bodies of air with different densities. An observer may see nearby lightning, but the sound from the discharge is refracted over his head by a change in the temperature, and therefore the density, of the air around him. As a result, the lightning discharge appears to be silent."

You're wrong and right at the same time.

You guys from Dorr need a life! What I had read said that people called it heat lightning because they thought it was caused from the air being so hot.
