K5 Blazer / Jimmy Who has had one?

I used some of the money from the insurance on the bird to go towards a new winter DD since the exploder falling apart.

I bought a '85 GMC Jimmy Full Size 4x4 (305 / 700R4) with the removable top. It has a Edelbrock carb on it that I want to put on my '86 TA and put the TPI on the Jimmy for better fuel economy. I want some 33" tires and some basic off road toys.

It is black, very rough and very ugly but runs and drives great. I am still in the planning stage and I am looking for ideas for the project.

I know that many of you are off roaders and 4X4 geeks. So post up some pics of your K5 projects for us to enjoy!

I can try to find some pictures of my Blazer. I had a 76 Full size Blazer with a 350 and a 4 barrel quad jet. I sold it with over 300K on the original motor.

My dad bought it in 84 and redid the entire truck. Lots of rust I got it when I was about 14 and was planning on doing all over rebuild because it sat in our field and rusted out, but I ended up selling it to some guy who wanted the frame. I hate myself for it because now I want it back.

Ooo a '76. Those were the coolest. They had all the perks big motor, competent 4x4, a FULL convertible top, and even the best looks of the K5 trucks. Please post them up that would be cool. I was originally looking at a 1st gen but they are pretty rare to find in the price range I wanted. I paid $750 for mine and it came with a new in box tailgate and an Edelbrock torquer intake that I will probably sell. Mine runs and drives great, starts faster than any car I have ever owned!!! But it needs lots of sheet metal. The bed floor will require a 6" section of sheet to be welded in as well as a new rear valence panel.

BTW I am on the lookout for some parts. Any good places to buy odds and ends like door hinges and latches? Mine are sagging badly and now the passenger door won't shut. I am going to post up some pics of mine, in its current project state before I break out the welder. I also need a workable rear valence panel (The heavy length of iron the tailight bolts to) if you know anybody. I hate to pay the $180 for a new one if someone else has a parts truck lying around.

LMC Truck. Order their mag, they have every single piece on all trucks from like 46 - 06. Including any bolt you could need. I don't know if I have any pictures my mom might but shes on vacation right now but when she gets back I'll see if she can dig up some pictures and I'll scan them.

I think I looked on their website and they wanted like $120 for a door latch. Ouch! I have heard that any full size chevy truck can be a parts donor for these K5s. So I am on the lookout for someone parting out a mid '80s Sierra, Silverado, or Suburban.

I just went through like 12 photo albums but they were no car pictures in there and I know my mom has pictures of the cars around somewhere.

my dads used to have a purple 70's blazer i was too young to remember the year but i remember that thing would wear out u joints like no other

hey Ben at the begining of august I bought a 91 GMC Jimmy and the guy I got it from was the original owner .He started to restore it but gave up and let it sit for three years before I bought it. the body was striped to the bare metal and doors and fendersand tailgait was off but it ran .I got all the interior (in grey) and all the stock moldings with it, the tires are like new too all for $600.00 the body had NO rust most solid k5 body I have ever seen in michigan.....If you need k5 parts I have some so call me and let me know what you need I scraped the other k5 I had two weeks ago. heres two pic of my progress on my project

I had a 76 when I came back from texas it had a 3" body lift and 6" susp lift and the motor was built with a turbo 400 trans behind it had 3/4 ton axles with 4:10 gears tooblazer1.jpg

Ben, check out fullsizechevy.com, there are TONS of K5's over there. Blazerforum.com too, there are quite a few. Take a look around the classified sections, you can probably find people selling the parts you need in a part-out.

Start whoring up those boards, mifbody.com isn't the only place to find dedicated, friendly people who share the same interests as you. . . lol

76 did not have a FULL convertible top.
My Nephew and my Bro in law just bought (each) a 72 K5 Blazer. Yes it has the FULL vert top. So they have 2 of them to restore. My bro in laws has the 400 and my Nephews has a built 350 in it.
I'm pretty sure 1973 was the last yer for the FULL convertible top.
Justyn is also selling a 83/84 K5 blazer for $3900.00. He bought that 1st before he found the 72 blazers.

Hey jon, That looks like a nice truck! Yours is much cleaner than mine (for now ) I forgot you mentioning your interest in big trucks, you and me buddy are two birds of a feather between our V6 Firebirds and our late model K5 Jimmy's. Any parts you could help me locate I would be greatful for. I want to have this truck on the road by October (It runs and drives now) but needs lots of work. The K5 you scrapped, did it have a decent rear valence panel, how about the door hardware (Latch, hinge, and window parts), or floor or bed sheet metal?

I am jealous of your old '76. That must have been a real blast. I bet your son must have gotten a kick out of that toy!

TJ, Thats about what my truck looks like (Much cleaner than mine though). I like that tire size and the ride height seems just right. What do you suppose those are, 33" tires and a 4" suspension lift? I love the black with the dark window tint. I hope I can fix mine up to be this nice someday. I will have to keep an eye on my U-joints. The prior owner claimed to have replaced the U-joints as well as new ball joints up front.

I am glad to hear that. I can't wait to have this thing fixed up and on the road. I love my big ugly truck, but I will love it even more when I have more solid sheet metal underneath it
