1988 Pontiac Banshee IV Engine

Hello,

I was wondering if you might do me a favor and kindly post some images of the Pontiac Banshee's Engine. I am really in-to these concept cars, and I would appreciate it to use as reference for a project that I'm working on. Thank you, very much for your time.

I know this is my first post, I'm not usually the sort of person who doesn't introduce himself first. It's just that I'm very excited about this project and need all the Pics I can get!

I couldn't remember such a car, so I had to Google it. The GM Heritage Ceter website says that "the Banshee IV was powered by a port fuel-injected, 4.0 liter, dual overhead cam, aluminum V8 capable of producing 230 horsepower. The rear wheel drive coupe had a 5-speed manual transmission, independent rear suspension, four wheel disc anti-lock brakes and wraparound adjustable rear spoilers. Wheels were mounted on special Goodyear 17 x 8-inch tires in front and 17 x 91/2-inch tires in the rear."

230 horses? Are they kidding? Must be a typo, because between the SS hood intake, an SLP air lid and filter, and the SLP Dual/Dual, I think I can prolly make 215+ in my vert with my stock V6!

Did this car actually run, or was it a static fiberglas model just for the auto shows?

You have to remember this car was debuted in the late 80's. The LT1 ( in corvette form) was still 4 years away, camaro form 5-6 years away. This means the LT1 was just being designed. So what I am saying is that TPI was still king as far as new car V8, modern fuel injection was near but not out.

The engine they used was most likely a early NorthStar coupled to the T5 transmission in a "one off" way. It could have been an LT5 in smaller form, but really a LT5 is a modded TPI I have read. So which one is more believable, I have no idea.

I think Nate is spot on with this one, but it would have been an early development engine and not easily (or desired) to be duplicated today.

The Northstars were an evolution of the LT5 on a smaller scale.

All that aside, I do believe that this car does run and move under it own power (although I'd wager it is very speed limited)...about a decade ago I happened to see it sitting in the halls of the GM studio all by it's lonesome, so it must have gotten there somehow...

I would love to see some of the concepts from the 80s 90's and 2000's in there present day form. I bet the silver 5th gen concept is trashed. That cars been everywhere.

Actually, per the director for the GM Heritage Center from our last visit, they make two of almost everything these days...so they have two coupes and two 'vert concepts for the 5th gens (which is why they look like they've been everywhere)...

And they had a coupe and a 'vert concept at the Center the last time we were there...

(As a side note, per the aforementioned director, the concepts that they sold off at Barrett-Jackson a couple of years ago were the duplicates...GM still has a copy of everything that was sold at BJ).

There is an open area just inside the main reception area (just past security) at the Tech Center that would have several of the older concepts on display for the GM employees to see/study. The most memorable one that comes to mind is when they had a Corvette memorial set up circa 2003. Nearly every memorable 'Vette concept was in there (except the original Mako Shark) including a bunch of the mid-engine concepts going back to the late-60s. No, they were not all in pristine condition, but it was impressive just to see them all in one place...

Early Aurora's were damn fast too. Loved driving my bosses.
