  • Anyone tell me if these are authentic AC Cobras?

Just got back from the Roush open house. He has two Cobra's, and I was asking some people working there if they were authentic (I don't know how to tell), and I got mixed responses. I was hoping you guys could shed some light on this.

Also, anyone tell me what these are? They had a Mercury badge on the steering wheel but that's all I could find.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the interiors wouldn't have been upgraded as shown if these were real... But that's just my opinion..

        That's my thoughts as well.

As for those red and black cars, no idea.

That's what I thought too. One employee said both of them were, and another employee said, "I know the purple one is, not sure about the other one."

But I agree, those were my thoughts - if someone has an original AC Cobra, why would they want to mess with it?

The orginal ones had aluminum bodies. This is not to say no one is making aluminum bodied Cobras aftermarket but most of the kits have fiberglass bodies.

My dad almost bought a real AC cobra 20 years ago.......but my mom wouldn't let him! lol Bad move mom

Look at the turn signal stalk. Its from a new car. Definitely not an original. Best way is to see if the body is aluminum or fiberglass.

Carrol Shelby is still making his "continuation" series of Cobras...all aluminum bodies...all with a different VIN to distinguish them from the originals.

And there are at least two other companies out there that I'm aware of that are re-popping aluminum bodies.

That aside, the black "autokraft" is a now defunct (I think) fabricator...real Cobras never came with 5-speeds.

The purple one is the most realistic looking but is missing the jack-bumperettes on the front, wheels appear to be aluminum knockoffs, and I believe the exhaust is wrong (no rear exit exhaust available on the 427 cars...289 cars only...could be wrong).

So just from the handful of pics, I'll say they're both fake.

I have a good friend of mine that has a real '66 427 Cobra (in the registry).

He bought it in 1984 in boxes, found an original aluminum body in England, and restored it.

Except he restored it to do vintage racing on the SCCA circuit...this is it...yes, a half million dollar car that still gets driven hard...

Jack has one hell of a collection over there. One one hand, it's nice to see all those collectibles parked under one roof but the on the other, it's sad because you know they haven't been moved in quite some time. When I was there, it seemed like there were more cars with flat tires than not.

i have only ever seen 1 real one. it was at a car cruise in oxford. a young lady(30 or so) had it. her dad had bought it new. it took so long to get and he complained enough that he got a very very nice upgrade. when it arrived it had a 427. after many years he repainted and added metal flake. she knew it was worth alot but when the car show dj said there was a million dollar car in the crowd she almost died
