We took the Badger Car Ferry from Ludington, Mi to Manitowoc, Wi yesterday. We've never done this before, and since it was the last weekend of the season for the ferry, we thought it'd be a fun way to travel.
The Badger was launched in 1953, is 410 feet long, 60 feet wide, has two 3500 hp @ 125 rpm coal-fired steam engines, and each propeller spins at 700 rotations per minute. Yet the big ship cruises lazily across the water at only 16 knots, it took us 4hrs to arrive at the other side of the Lake Michigan.
The fun is in the checking out the history of the ship and the way it use to be. Even though the ship has been refurbished and somewhat modernized there are aspects of it that are truly like stepping back in time. It still has some of the original bunkhouses that are smaller than the bathrooms in todays homes. We had a great time and got to experience something new, if you've never done this before I would recommend doing it sometime.
Below are some pics from the cruise there and back.......
