Okay I tried a few different settings and a tripod with better results but not what I am aiming for. I think I need to get some faster glass. Any of you Nikon guys have any suggestions?

Randy is exactly correct. Yes, you must use a tripod at night if it is not a flash shot. And set your ISO to the highest setting possible.
I shot this with a tripod but left the ISO in auto. The long distance makes it almost impossible to get it perfectly clear.

keep in mind having ISO high as possible is never ideal unless you are getting no available light. it will make the picture too GRAINY like the one you posted. ideally, if you cannot make an exposure length any longer- then you increase ISO. otherwise- keep your aperture low (numerically) and your exposure time long (larger fraction).

Awesome! Thats the second nomination for the 50 MM F1.8 AF Nikkor I've received today. I have been looking on Ebay for the right one. Luckily they average $50-150 usually so maybe I'll get lucky. I am kind of hoping to grab a 35MM full frame camera that comes with the 50 MM lens. I am looking at this tripod and a remote...

Ben, I'll have to show you a couple of books I've got on the subject, I think you would enjoy reading them. They cover a wide range of topics from choosing the right aperture and ISO settings for different lighting conditions to using double exposure and locking shutters to create pretty cool effects that you would probably like to experiment with. I should have brought out my SLR's, I usually get pretty good results with my Minolta, but lately, my Canon has been surprising me. . .

I wish you did. It would have been nice to have some backup shots since 80% of them came out like the pic of the Austin Healey in the other pic. Maybe next time. I am in the process of looking for an earlier AF 50 MM F1.8 lens since they are cheap and will work well on my camera.

This should help out a lot since I can then crank the f-stop down to 1.8 rather than the 5.6 my kit lens allows me. I am watching a few on Ebay. Maybe I can snag on in a week or two and you and I will have to go on a photo expedition!
