In fact, all 1st & 2nd gen cars all had the transverse muffler located behind the rear end. Two pipes in, two pipes out, one muffler. The only "true dual" system I can think of on a Camaro would be the rare chambered exhaust that was offered for a short time in 1969. It had 4 mufflers, and no place where they merged.

In 1975 (and after), when the first cat was added, there was only one cat, but the pipes split and ran through two mufflers. Still not "true duals" in the classic sense.

On 4th Gens, the first SLP, "two on the left" is a very unrestricted system. My '96 SS has this. Two cats, Y into a 3" pipe back to a single muffler that flows straight through. There is no "switch back" inside this muffler. The 3" pipe goes into the passenger side of the muffler, and then splits in a "Y" inside the muffler and exits through two pipes on the drivers side. With the muffler off, you can look right through from one side to the other.

I liked this system so much, I added it to our '85 IROC-Z as well.
    Good info there, Doug.

To add to the above, all 75-81 T/As (and most Formulas) had a y-pipe into a single cat that then split back out to twin mufflers and pipes.

The 70-74 Firebirds have the system you described above...two pipes into one muffler, out into two pipes.

First gens are a different story. 67-69 Firebirds with the 400 (or maybe even the 350 HO) got true dual exhaust. Still trying to confirm this.

But this would be the correct exhaust for a 69 T/A:

Well, I have a '69 Trans Am model, and it came with the system we see in those pictures, or the one without the transverse 2-in, 2-out muffler. I obviously chose the latter.

Not being a Firebird expert, I would guess that the three muffler system on the '69 Trans Am is the Pontiac equivilant of the chambered exhaust for the '69 Camaro. I'm thinking the two mufflers under the car are actually resonators. Pretty cool, I have never seen this system before.

it was a common performance setup at that time - mustangs also used them for the step up models ie: 351/4v, they used a twin resonator single transverse muffler out to duals setup - thats what i had on my 69

The single pipe came stock on the LS1 WS6's...I can't remember what years though. I believe they were the early year's like 98 and 99. I'm thinkin it was the same for the SS's. I'm pretty sure SLP made the loudmouth with a single pipe version.
