  • 1st Gen Control Arm Bushings

I'm gathering front end parts for my bird and I'm trying to decide on Polyurethane or rubber. I'll probably go polyurethane unless someone has a strong case for rubber. Is there any difference between the Prothane brand and Energy suspension brand?

    I would strongly suggest rubber.

      I gotta ask, why?

Everything I read says stock rubber bushings will deteriorate more quickly than poly. Are there no performance benefits to running poly?

        Noise Vibration and Harness mainly.

I have seen poly bushings fail as well as rubber. Which deteriorates quicker? I think that would depend on the material used, the environment it was kept it and abuse it was subject to.

Are you building a car to take to cruises/shows/ to get ice cream or touring car/car for the track? In mainly stock form a 68 firebird handling is not going to be drastically improved from what material of bushings are used. All of the advertisements compared a worn out suspension to a suspension with poly bushings. A fair comparison would be as follows
-40 year old bushing to replacement rubber bushings
        -Replacement rubber to poly bushings
-Poly bushings to delrin or solid bushings.

IMO if you are on a budget and want your firebird to handle better look into springs/shocks, sway bars, and tires. If you want to handle like it is on rails you should be looking at aftermarket control arms, spindles to correct poor front end geometry, different seats etc.

            Who needs to stop?!

Brian, You make vaild points. I should have stated that this is all part of a total front end rebuild and suspension overhaul. I'm replacing control arm bushings as well as doing the Gulstrand mod to the upper control arm mounting points and replacing tie rods, steering arms and ball joints. I also have some drop coil springs for the front and drop leaf springs for the rear. At some point in the very near future I'll be adding disc brakes and new wheels as well. Main thing is, I only want to replace these components once.

            Thanks for all the input.

              Your welcome.
I restored my chevelle to be a cruiser with a few upgradess. I used moog components and rubber bushings throughout. I improved the handling by installing lowering springs, larger sway bar in front, adding a rear sway bar, and installed 17" wheels. I want to correct the camber curve but that was another $600 so I stopped there.
To be honest my Cobalt SS handles very well(faster, safer, more efficient, etc) so each of my cars accomplish a different goal.

Did you just go with the Moog rubber bushings from one of the major online retailers?

This was back in 2006...I either got them from OPGI or the local auto parts.
