  • Installing Koni's.. nuts and adjusting rebound question

    First time installing konis, these are just rears.

    First issue the included adjustment tool does't fit ontop for some reason... I tried pushing it on really hard and I end up just compressing the shock.

    Other question is they have two nuts on top instead of one. Manual says torque spec is 13 ft-lbs.. is this for both nuts or what? Or just the lower one?

    Last question is how am I supposed to know what the default rebound setting is at, obviously I don't want to have both sides at different settings..?
    I guess that would be fixable if I figured out the adjustment tool. Does it turn forever in one direction or will it stop? Don't want to mess them up by over turning or whatnot.

    You cannot over turn the adjustment knobs. Back them all the way out to full loose and bring them in until your satisfied.

        What the hell happened to that Bilstein?!

        All the way in is loose.

        The one Koni set of shocks I have seen had yellow caps on the top end but didn't have the white adjuster I'm curious as the guy offered me the set for a damn good price.

        Edit: The double nut is just to make sure the first doesn't back out. Torque the second onto the first.

          Funny story about that, I guess I drove around on it that way for a while. As for how long, I'm not really sure. At the bottom you can see the bolt sheared itsself off. The bottom was completely disconnected and flopping around, the top part must have bent down on itsself from all the sagging. All the marks on the shock must be from rubbing up and down against the control arm or rear end bracket. Lame that I need new nuts for the bottom end now, as of course those didn't come with the shocks only the top side nuts did.

          So I don't torque the bolt closest to the bushing at all? Seems backwards to me but I'll try what you mention tomorrow by only doing the top one.

            Torque the first nut to factory specs. Then torque the second nut slightly more, double nutting (great term, right ) is just to make sure the first doesn't back off/loosen up.

              Either my torque wrench sucks or these are just too hard to torque down on the tops, since the rubber bushings just keep smashing down more and more. I had to eye-ball it. Also for anyone else that runs into the same problem with adjusting, you actually have to tap the adjustment tool with a decent hammer to get it on there.

                I couldn't torque the top on mine either. I was told to just tighten it down until the bushings started to compress but not so much that they started to bulge out from the edge of the cupped washers. Also, I didn't need a hammer to put that adjuster on top, but that looks like the correct one so whatever works for you.
