  • Bilstein install, ran into some problems...

Been working on getting on getting my 4 yellow christmas presents installed. Backs went on super easy, but the fronts have been kickng my ass. Got the spring/shock assemblys off, and the springs compressed, but when I went to take the nut off the top of the shock, well thats my problem. Its like literally not there. I dont even know whats holding this thing together....

I tried pounding a socket on the end of it to try and turn something, but no dice.

    Any ideas?

The strut is more than likely spinning with the nut, short pulses with an impact usually works

Yeah those top nuts are notorious for being rusted solid.
Did mine at a friends shop with a wall mounted spring compressor and it still took 3 hours just to get them both apart. And that included using an Impact, Air chisel and a torch.

Looks like you're going to have to cut it off. Can't you buy new strut mounts if you need to, as well? Not too familiar with struts but I do remember selling a lot of mounts at work. Same thing aren't they?

Edit: googled it, yes they are.

Oh wow, yeah just cut if off or use an air chisel. Its not a bad idea to replace the strut mount anyways while you're in there.

I used a cut off wheel when I did mine on my 2001. I would not use a torch as it will likely destroy the mount.

I am curious as to what mine will be like on my 1993 when I do them in a few weeks.

There's nothing there that even resembles a nut, we screwed with it for hours. Gonna have to torch of cut it for sure, wad trying to avoid that as the stupid mounts are pretty pricey and everywhere I called has to order them.

Wow... Ryan and I were discussing my suspension swap earlier today. He said this nut would be a pain if it was rusty. Fortunately for me the shocks were already replaced about 5k miles ago! Good luck with it Spencer - I say just torch it and get a new mount. How much are they?

lol look at everyone of my suspension posts.
always get new mounts when doing struts. pack that area with antiseize or grease for later service

Guess I will stop in to the auto parts store tomorrow and get a set ordered. I assume I need to get the big rubber insert thing for it too, or is that part of the mount?

This approach worked very well with the Monte.

If your getting a new mount there is no need to torch anything. I purchasred mount later down the road. and it came with everything I needed to assemble the unit
