  • Brake line repair?????

Got a question, my kids car sprung a leak in the main(steel) line from the master cylinder to the rear brakes. Can you cut the line and repair it? I am guessing at a minimum I would need a flare tool and some kind of fittings? Idea's, input??? I just had it towed him, leaks BAD.. Haven't actually looked at the line yet, will look tomorrow when I get home.. Thanks!

Guess I need to buy a flare kit/tube cutter.. Autozone(or similar) should have the fittings and line for repair?

My son's 97 grand prix did the same thing a while back. Bet when you go under there and look, the line will be all rusted to shit. Do yourself a favor and replace the whole line. We're talking about brakes here.
When in doubt, Whip it out !

if you go the double flare route, you can rent the tool from autozone, so then you dont have to buy it, and you will need 1 3/16 union, and 2 regular brake fittings, but like they said it will be better to do the whole thing.. just not as easy.

Definitely a double-wall flare at least. I went the cheapo-I don't care route on the Jetta when I blew a brake line with a compression fitting and a new piece of line. Irresponsible I know, but if something goes I'll throw it in first and shut it off...

some of the metric lines (like on 4th gen) have bubble flare and not double flare.when I relocated my slp linelock had to buy lines with bubble flare for abs/master ends and then double flare linelock ends.(only had flare tool for double flare) buddy had similar problem on ford and brake line ran alll the way up to master cyl. good luck!!

There is a company by our home that has all the spec's on computer and will bend and make new line to fit car. We had new ones done for Brians Camaro last year. I'm sure there are places by you also that do it. We did stainless steel and all the lines cost us 185.00. Steel I am sure would be cheaper. Company name is Inline Tubing, Macomb, Mi. Can look up Number if you need it larry.

My wife(through her work) knows a guy who owns a used car lot/garage.. He looked at it today, both lines to the rear were shot.. $150 replaced, front to rear(both lines).. Thought that was pretty reasonable and saved me the hassle...
