The Michigan FBody Association is a centralized website for FBody enthusiasts to discuss what's going on in the Michigan area. MiFbody.com was created to allow for an easy one-stop place to find out what's going on in Michigan as far as FBody events, to find out what clubs are available in your immediate area, and for an easy place to post classifieds for items you want to sell! Our goal was to create a more close-knit community of FBody enthusiasts in the state of Michigan, and to bring Camaro and Firebird enthusiasts alike together for some amazing FBody events!
The most important thing to know about the Michigan FBody Association is that we are NOT a club! The Michigan FBody Association is open to everyone, and is a community. This is an interesting discussion. I'm a bit surprised at the number of people that like the KYB shocks. There is a couple, David & Mary Pozzi, over on NastyZ28 that are nationally recognized suspension/solo II experts. Mary has recently been used by several magazines as the driver for various suspension comparison test sessions and evaluations.
They absolutely hate KYB shocks. They recommend Bilsteins, Konis or Edelbrock IAS shocks. Hmmmm .......

I agree that the KYB's are far from the best setup, and that is why I reccomend Koni's to anyone who's serious about getting their suspension right the first time. Problem is too many people don't do enough research on their suspension choices and get what they deem affordable even though they will probably replace them in 2 yrs because the cheapo parts failled.

I agree but in reality there going to replace those cheaper shocks 2 or 3 times before the Koni's wear out. Add to that the lifetime warranty on the Koni's regardless of what springs are used with them. The same thing can not be said about Bilstiens and KYB's.
This is why I say buck up and do it right he first time

Totally agree. I'm running Koni DA's on my SS. My wife wasnt to happy with how much I spent. LOL... But she got over it.

Yeah, of coarse someone who is into their suspension set-up as much as her or for someone who autocrosses alot is not going to even consider KYB's. However, all i said is if your ON A BUDGET then they are hard to beat. Looking back, I would not have put anything else on my car at the time because A) I couldn't afford it and B) it just wasn't needed for my car at that time. Would I put a new set on mine now.....no, but I'm not a broke college student either. I can honestly say though, for the money I paid for them, they have served me VERY well for the past 10 plus years and still show no signs of getting weak. This was a nice suprise since every "expert" out there was telling me at the time that if I lowered my car I would blow these POS shocks/struts out in no time....that was 5 years ago. I have zero regrets with these KYB's and will not hesistate to recommend them to anyone who is on a tight budget.

I was not questioning your decision on picking KYB's. I have not bought new regular shocks in years and am just trying to filter through all the comments made on the Internet, both here and elsewhere. It's interesting to read all the differing opinions. I know they sell ton's of KYB's and many people are very satisfied with them. In fact, I never knew there was such an adament contingent that disliked them until I read the many posts over on NastyZ28.
On Project DZ74 we went with the QA-1 coil-over setup on the front to take advantage of the ride height adjustability. They are definitely not for someone on a tight budget. However, we did not have an unlimited budget for the project, and we tried to cut costs where ever we could, so we didn't buy new shocks for the rear. We put the 23 year old Monroe Max heavy duty shocks that were on the car, right back on it. They seem to still be as good as new.
Several years ago, we were at the Spring Carlisle (PA) swap meet and I came across a vendor that was having a great sale on Koni shocks. I bought a complete set for the IROC-Z. But with only 47,000 miles on that car, it has not needed new shocks yet. But, I have them on a shelf when need to change them.
After running the Hot Rod Mag Camaro at Gingerman last summer, I have thought about upgrading the suspension on that car. (probably won't happen any time soon) So, I have been taking an interest in suspension discussions, especially for 4th Gens. So, my post about the Pozzi's and the KYB shocks was meant to add to the debate, and generate more discussion about shocks/suspension, not a commentary on what anyone is using.
I still want to hear everyone's opinions on suspension upgrades, especially concerning rear lower control arms, panhard bars, strut tower braces and the like. I'm initerested in a handling suspensiion setup, not a drag race oriented one.

IMHO, you buy Konis if you want a premium ride with a premium price. I didn't want either - to me, the fun of owning our cars is having a gritty driving experience.... I have no problems with my KYBs - I have mine set to the hardest setting because I wanted that gritty ride and it works fine for me. IMHO, unless you're wanting to autocross, Konis just aren't an option at their price point. For $300, you can either buy a whole set of KYB AGX shocks or you can buy ONE Koni shock... At that price point, even if my KYBs didn't last, I could buy 2.5 sets of KYBs before I get to how much the Koni set would cost. But what it all boils down to is that I honestly don't believe (unless you're really doing twisties or autocrossing) that you'll even be able to tell the difference...
