but then the local shop said a 205 tire would be best, so a little help there would be great

My opinion... narrower is better for winter driving. As narrow as you can for your wheel width.

Watch your tire sizes. The two sizes you mentioned are 1.5 inches different in diameter and will give you up to 5mph error in speedo reading.

i have 235 55r 16's on my car right now and they work great in the winter. I used BFGoodrich Traction ta. Excellent all season tire with good ride quality. I have driven my car two years in the snow and so far good results with 235

15's??? What is this going on? I have 215/65/16 on my stock snowflake wheels for my V6. That's the recommended size and was the stock base size tire on steel wheels. You'd need like a 6" rim to run a 205 on.

he's right 205 mm is 8.0708 inches. My sixer came with 235's on it, but 215's would be better if you can run them.

I've run both 205/70/15's and 215/65/15's on my S10's. Didn't seem to make a difference in driving. 205/70/15's are cheaper. I recommend Winterforce snow tires. Cheap and they last and have great traction. They give up a bit of traction on ice to a Blizzak but make up for it in longevity.

blizzaks are on sale for $40 each, but they are 215 whereas 205s are what the local shop said, so your saying 215's would be ok?

Yeah, 215's are fine. I ran them on my Xtreme and on my 4 banger S10 after that until it got totalled. I saw no difference in how it drove in snow. It looked better with 215's vs 205's as they look real narrow, especially on an Xtreme with the fender flares.
Is this a regular cab? Both my 4 bangers were regular cab short bed 5 speeds. I put 200lbs of cast iron tractor weights in the back between the wheelwell and the tailgate(100lb on each side) and it handled great. I always had loads of fun sliding it around and seeing how far sideways I could get it and keep going straight! The Sonoma I drove at stock height as well as dropped 4" front and 2" rear. I also had ZQ8 sport suspension sway bars on it. My S10 was a 2" drop ZQ8 from the factory. I preferred driving the Sonoma lowered since it had a better center of gravity and turned better along with the bigger sway bar and adding a rear sway bar.

ya i run 235/55/R16s on my xtreme. slides alllll over the place in the winter. but i've driven it through 2 winters so far and i know how to drive it. but ya if you want traction you really need snow tires.

it is a base as they come, 2wd 5spd 2200 engine

i drove the ls1 last winter, easy stuff so i figured this cant be too much worse

i figured i'll put some weight in it once winter comes, maybe if i got a spare engine block
