  • Wheel Expert Question

Alright last night while checking the torque on my Lugs I busted a stud.
I've heard of snapped studs before it's just never happened to me.

The Question is has anybody heard of problems using the BMW bolt pattern wheels on GM vehicles.
My current wheels are 5 x 120mm and the GM pattern is 5 x 120.65mm
meaning the studs are .3 mm off.
The wheels have been on the car for almost 2 years without any problems
I would usually swap out to my 16's for the winter but since I was out of work for 13 months last year the car sat on the new wheels all winter.
The Car is a 98 Formula and is obviously almost 10 years old.

Any tips or insight would be appreciated, Thanks

They've talked about the BMW wheels over on thirdgen.org. I believe the difference was mainly that our wheels are hub-centric and the BMW wheels are lug-centric. So they should fit over the lugs but make sure you get them centered on there good.

Could be totally wrong, but, there's guys over there running BMW bolt pattern and thats what they said.

EDIT: Here's a link to a thread over there. I guess ours are lugcentric too. Or at least, there is differing opinions: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/su...mw#post2683089

There's lots of debate on this everywhere. Some people have ran the wrong bolt pattern wheels for years with no issues, others have had them on a few months and broke studs. I had broken studs on an Olds Calais because the idiots that did the new struts overtorqued the lugs and snapped the studs. I lost a wheel because of it too. I had more problems with wheel studs on that car than any other I've ever owned. If you're worried about it, buy some high strength ARP studs or something and replace them all.

            Thanks guys
I just did a search over on LS1tech about this and the consensus was the same. there are literally thosands of people using the BMW Bolt pattern wheels without a hitch.
Meaning the difference is so small that it shouldn't be a problem considering it would be within tolerance level. And most people where using hubcentric rings which I also have on the car.
I only broke one stud and the wheel is still on the car so I'll pick up some ARP's and be done with it.

            Thanks again for the responses.

So the REAL question here is...what were you torqueing the lugs too?

That's what I've been torquing them to unless someone tells me otherwise.
