  • [Project] It Never Ends

Ok so I did the intro thing a week or so back, posted a few pics of my fleet. Said I'd get a build thread going. For my own sanity (and others) I'm going to keep it in one thread for the three cars....and the K5 since there was some interest in that too.

I'll start off by saying that I never intended to document much of my progress on the cars. So the first couple posts are going to be random pictures from the last couple years. I'll try to describe each one give a time frame.

In case you missed it, I've got a small collection of F-bodys. A 1978 Trans Am, 1982 Z28 and a 1997 Formula, along with a 1976 K5 Blazer and 1999 Lumina that the wife drives. The 78 I got as payment for doing some work for a friend on his 2nd gen. The 82 I picked up cheap and didn't even want at the time. The 97 I bought from some kid who beat it and put it away wet...still think I payed a bit too much for it. The K5 is normally my daily driver and the Lumina is just a decent reliable beater (3.8 FTW). I'll also toss in some stories/pics of the parts cars I've gotten to help finish mine.

I"ll start with the 82, since I think I have the most pics of that one.

I picked this one up through a guy (Ed) I know from work. It was his friends sons project that never got off the ground. One day he says to me "You've got a Camaro right?" I told him yeah I did. "Well now you've got two, pay me back when you can." I wasn't even looking for another one, this one would actually be the third one (of many) I brought home. Went and looked at it the next day. It was an 82 Z28, Crossfire/auto car. Body was real solid, no motor or transmission but the Crossfire intake and parts were in the passenger seat. Interior was near perfect. Worst part was someone cut the drivers floor out and the spare tire well. Looked like they had cut the floor out to get the transmission crossmember out. I figured it was worth the $350 I now owed Ed so I loaded it up and brought it home...stuck it in the back yard and let it sit. That was around July 2005.

Winter came around and I decided to finally do something with it. Pushed it into the garage and started gutting it, was going to build a drag car. Everything that wasn't needed got tossed up into the attic. Hvac, plastics, wiring, interior, etc... Cut the floors out, actually just the passenger side since the drivers was no longer there. Ordered some pans (talk about sticker shock on those things). Best I could tell they all came from the same factory in China so I ordered from my local Napa to avoid paying $99 shipping on them from Classic. Came in and they actually fit really well. Had to trim some more in the car to get them to sit down correctly, was very pleased with how they came out when it was all said and done (especially for my first time doing floors). Next up was a roll bar, because race cars need bars. Ordered a Competition Engineering 8pt kit through Jegs. Think I had to pay a $49 delivery fee or something like that. If you've never bought a roll bar, with the exception of the main hoop, it could probably be shipped UPS or FeEx pretty easily. Mine came in a 48' "YELLOW" trailer. Looking in there when I was helping the driver get it off.....it was the only thing in the entire trailer. Got going installing it, took my time and measure a ton. Borrowed a friends chop saw to notch the tubes, still had to finish fitting them with a grinder/flap wheel. Now I'll admit the some of the welds don't look the best but I'm confident in them. About this time spring was rolling around and the first Midland swap meet of the year was coming up. Perfect time to look for some parts. Ended up with a 1974 454 block (later found out it was bored .060 over), forged crank and some 781 heads. Brought that stuff home and stuck it under the bench....where it still sits to this day.

Car found its way back outside for a year or two while I played with other vehicles. Never really had the motivation to work on it, almost like I didn't want to. One day while walkin though the junkyard (Hoopers) I spotted a clean 88 SC Camaro. No motor or trans, but it had the two pieces of ground effects that go behind the rear wheels, one of which I was missing for the 82. I've know the owners of that place for years figured I'd get a good deal on the ground effects. Asked how much for the gfx (wanted the entire set, couldn't bring myself to mix/match). $200 Mikey said. Thought that was kinda high, I asked how about the entire car, assumed I could take what I wanted and scrap the rest. $250 he said....Sold!. Got the car home and started looking it over. Found receipts for every time maintenance was done, gas put in, mileage logs. This car was babied and rust free. I just could cut it up. Only thing wrong with it was the interior smelled like coffee. So the car I bought for one piece in particular I wasn't even going to use. Tossed a quick paintjob on it and sold it for a healthy profit. It came across craigslist not too long ago actually. After selling that one I had some money to play around with. Decided to use it on the 82, as my other Camaro (83 Z28) was getting too rusty underneath. So I had a parts donor for the little parts no one ever thinks about. The 83 was only in ok shape when I got it. Used it year round for a couple years. At some point I cloned it into an Iroc. Gfx, interior, wheels. That's where I got my nose/rear/gfx for the 82.

So I was down to one 3rd gen and a shit ton of parts. Pushed the 82 back in the garage and blew it apart. I mean everything came out, if it had a bolt holding it on it was taken off. Being a single guy living with another car guy, most (ok, who am I kidding...all) of the parts got scattered around the house. That soon changed when I met my girlfriend/future wife. All the parts got shoved into an extra bedroom. Eventually that wasn't good enough because we "needed the room". So I had to get busy on putting the car back together as progress had all but stopped when I met her (funny how that happens). And for the record.....the extra bedroom where I had everything is still empty. In fact I've got my 18x10's and the factory wheels to my 97 in there now. Did the remainder of the body work, couple small rust spots, door bottoms and the area behind the drivers mirror. Painted it a navy blue. I actually wanted a really deep almost blue/purple red...but somehow I came home with blue. Idk how that happened but it did. Only painted the car body at the time which would cause me some problems down the line. By the time I got around to doing the doors and bumpers about two years had passed. As a result the colors are a hair off, everyone that has seen the car says they can't see it. But I know it's there and it bugs the crap out of me. Every time I look at it I can see the different shades, it'll probably get worse as I haven't done the hood yet either. I've contemplated doing a scuff/shoot of the entire car once I've got all together but don't want to do a half ass job and don't want to take it all apart again.

By this time I realized I wanted a more street friendly car. So a full interior was going back in. I used the carpet from the 83 (which actually came from an 88 Iroc I parted). Pulled the sound deading (remember....race car!) and power washed it. Looked as good as new. In fact it was better because it actually fit the floor and was cut for the seat rails. And being that I didn't spend a few hundred on it, I didn't feel bad about cutting it to get around the down tubes on the bars. The plastic I mainly used the original 82 stuff, although I do have 3 other complete black interiors and a blue one up in the attic. A good scrubbing was all that was needed to clean them up. Had I know I was going to put the plastic back in I would have probably done the roll bar a little different around the B=pillar, but oh well. What I came up with was to cut a slot into the plastic, doesn't look too bad. I test fitted an extra piece just to be sure I'd work and I wouldn't screw up a black one. Decided against rear seats. Put in a nice set of 4th gen manual seats up front out of a 94 Formula I picked up cheap.
Found what I thought was a decent 86 Camaro. I'll go into details later on that one, but the only thing decent I got from it was a good/crack free dash pad. I'm going to try my best to keep it that way too....since it cost me $350.

More in the next post. Feel like I'm rambling...so I'll add some pics.

The motor is only really in there temporarily. Just till I can figure out the chassis and get it going down the road. It's an LT1 out of that 94 Formula. Odometer said it had 199,xxx on it. But I found records of GM putting a long block and new trans into the car at 145,000. The cylinder walls looked great when I had the heads off. Only thing I did to the long block was clean it up. Heads got new seals, mainly because they were off and the car had sat for 5 years. I snagged an intake off ebay. Believe it's a Edelbrock Victor E, been converted to use on the LT1. Only payed like $180 IIRC. Going to use the F car accessories for now. Probably put a new water pump on, the stock one had a bad bearing. Have a set of Hooker headers. Need to be derusted before I put them on the car.

Transmission is a T5 out of an 85 Z28. Again....story and pics on that later. Lets just say some meth head owned the car and I felt like I needed a bio hazard suit and a chemical shower when I was done with this one. A T5 isn't the greatest, but like the motor, only a place holder until I can get a T56.

Rear end is a stock 10 bolt for now. 3.42 gears with a open diff. 9" is likely to find it's way in there eventually. I've got a pile of axles I can throw at it till then.

Brakes up front are Ctsv calipers with 14" 5th gen rotors. Rear brakes are standard Ls1 car parts. Somewhere along the line I picked up some UMI subframe connectors and rear control arms. Shocks/struts are Koni yellows with Eibach pro-kit springs. Plan to use some Founders caster/camber plates when I get around to putting the front end back together. Wheels are 18x10 OeWheels Deep Dish C5's. Haven't bought tires yet. Might end up with some cheapo's for a while.

Eventual plans for the car are a big inch small block and T56. Don't think I'll jump on the Ls bandwagon for this car. Unless I come across a screaming deal.

I don't have any of doing the floor or roll bar. So I'll jump in around the time I started paint/body work.

Engine bay. The black on the firewall is overspray from when I painted the bottom of the floor pans. Only real metal work here was replacing part of the strut tower on the drivers side.

Shot down the drivers side. In process of doing the door bottoms and behind the mirror. Had a little spot in the A pillar too. At one point the car was repainted red, which faded to pink. Everything above the body line was pink, bellow was red.

      Passenger side.

      Rear passenger side.

Literally minutes after I sprayed primer.

      Some color

This picture actually took place a year or two after the body was painted.

Some of the interior. The color on the roll bar is the same color on the ground effects.

I uploaded a ton of pics to the bucket, but they aren't showing up in my library yet, so I'll jump ahead some.

The font end is all back together. Lights, grill, chin spoiler. Lt1 intake is just sitting there on there in these pics.

Wheel choice. Can also so the 4th gen door handle. They are smooth, 3rd gen has a recess.

That's an Ls1 rear rotor in there.

Will have some more once i can figure out where they uploaded to. Can see them on my phone but not the computer

              Couple more random pictures.

Sump I put into the stock tank. Thought doing it while the tank was out and dry was the best time.

              UMI Sfc's

The car that gave it's mint dash pad. Guy bought it new, been parked in that spot for 12 years or so. Carwash was the first stop with this one.

Car that gave it's motor and seats. Had been sitting for 5 years before I bought it. Almost every panel was dinged up. Interior was like new though. Scored a good dash pad for my 97 too.

Rear bumper. Little bit of orange peel on the blue.

Patch going into the passenger fender. Decided since the ground effects cover the lower part, I could live with the pitting on the bottom. Cleaned down to bare metal and went up from there.

At one point I crammed the 4th gen in there too. Space got really tight. The "WANNA RACE?" decal came off before I started driving it, previous owner put that on. Hatch leaning on the wall belongs to the blue car. I have extras, but this in my only one without a defroster....much cleaner looking.

Doors painted. Also did the rear bumper at the same time. So the doors and rear match each other. They are a touch off of the body color.

Practice piece. Had I originally wanted to use the plastic I would have placed the hoop over some. What I came up with, don't think it looks too bad considering it was an after thought. I got the opening on the black ones smaller/tighter to the bar.

Seat rails from my 83. New floors don't come with them. Didn't have the originals from when I cut the old floor out plus the drivers side was missing. You can see how well the fit the aftermarket floor. They fell right into place. So I guess I got that part right at least.

What the car looked like before I started on it. Still have the front end and SMC hood. It's starting to separate at the back. Believe I have two more SMC's as well, along with a few IROC's and base hoods. Plan is to buy an SS hood.

Car that donated its transmission and clutch parts. Not much was salvageable on this one. Only payed $200 for it. Guy wanted the motor back out of it, was a knockin 350...he could keep it. Someone started to the body work, floors were gone and interior was destroyed. Found a bunch of razor blades, burned spoons and needles inside. As well as many "fluid" stains on the seats/carpet/plastic. Defenetly signs of a drug addict and I think it may have been stolen at one point, column was all busted.

                  Thanks.

The K5 actually does quite well towing. I use it to haul scrap metal, car trailer, dump trailer, loaded 4 place snowmobile trailer, pretty much anything. Having the trailer set up correctly is more important with the short wheel base. I've got 3/4 ton axles, so a full floater in the rear and slightly bigger brakes up front (I'm on the lookout for a Dana60 front) than stock. The rear has lift springs instead of blocks, little more load capacity from those. I realize it's still a half ton truck but having some common sense while towing plays a bigger part I think than having a new $50k one ton diesel. Especially how often I tow and the distances I go.

Here's a shot with the dump trailer in tow. Was when I was filling my inground pool in. Put the baby tires on to get the correct height for the trailer. Note the red Formula in the background. Just of to the left is/was my 85 GMC K20, trans went getting on the highway one day. Over-reved and through a rod. Off to china it went after pulling what good parts were on it.

With the snow finally melting off of my 97 I figured I'd bump this back up. Hopefully the snow melts and we get a rain or two to wash off the roads in the next couple weeks so I can start driving it again.

Haven't done much of anything on the 3rd gen, tossed a blanket over the engine bay so it wouldn't get dusty while I was cleaning up an axle for my K5. The 2nd gen is still out in the lake that used to be my back yard. I put a battery in the Formula last week and started it up. Took it around the block and let it warm up, still need plates and insurance on it.

                    Story on the 97.

5 years or so ago I bought a 94 hard top/auto Trans Am. Needed a motor and little bit of body work. Paid $1200 for it. This was my first taste of the 4th gen world. Rebuilt the motor and did a few other common things, opti, water pump, headers, cai....etc. Drove it around all summer. Fixed minor things as they came up, window motors, ripped seat, headlight motors....the little things that break and bug you. Even still I loved it, the girl friend (now wife) even liked it. Then it stated costing me more money. Had a tire blow out on the highway. Messed up the fender pretty good. Drivers door was starting to separate and crack around the hinges. The final straw was when the transmission lost 3rd and 4th. I had enough and wanted out of it...traded it off for a 98 S10. That was a nice low mile truck, would have kept it but some A-hole ran a red light and totaled it and put me in the hospital for awhile.

Few years ago I got the itch for another 4th gen. It had always been in the back of my mind I should have just parked the 94 and taken a break from it, even though there were things I didn't like about it. But I had a fresh start this time around. Started looking for around for a 93-97 bird. Didn't care if it was a Trans Am or Formula. The requirements were 6 speed, t-tops, clean body and interior. Didn't care about the color. After looking at a few I found a 97 Formula. Looked clean in the add, said it needed a motor and a clutch. Got a hold of the guy and tried setting up a time, turns out he was in collage down in Indiana. Why he listed it when he did is beyond me, I had to wait about 6 weeks before I could even go look at it (not a big deal because it was around January so it's not like I'd be driving it). He wanted $2800 and I think we settled on $2700. Loaded it up and brought it home. Car came with another LT1, but as soon as I saw it it figured it was an L99 (4.3 v8) because of the iron heads. Turns out it was.

After getting it home and taking it off the trailer I couldn't resist taking it around the block. The car made great power but had a knock to it. The clutch didn't slip, but never felt the same each time you pressed it. Crammed the car into the garage with the 82 while I gathered money for the motor.

Pulled the motor/trans out the bottom (I went out the top on my last one, wanted to see what the fuss was about). Had it out and in the garage in a couple hours. Left it as complete as I could. Started taking things off the next day. Accessories, headers.... When I got to the transmission I first pulled trans from the bell, then the bell off. Started removing the pressure plate bolts and found the source of my noise. A could of the springs in the disc had come out and were just floating around, explains the changing pedal. Since I had it out I figured I'd go through the motor as it had 160,000 miles on it. Ended up having to replace the pistons, number 8 was scuffed up. Went with some forged Mahles. Had ARP bolts installed in the rods while the pistons were hung and the crank came back with just a polish job. Reassembled everything with Felpro gaskets, used Impala head gaskets for more compression. Scored a nice clutch from Summit that someone bought and returned. Everything went together uneventfully. I took advantage of the nice March weather we were having (the one where it got to like 70*) and dropped the car back onto the subframe. Car started like nothing had been done to it.

Drove the car all that summer and into the fall. Stated running rough around my birthday (October) so I didn't renew the plate/insurance as I was going to park it for the winter anyways. Tracked the problem down to a weeping water pump leaking onto the opti. Picked up new GM unit from Summit when they had them on clearance. Along with new water pump, plug wires, plugs and belt. Spring comes around and I installed everything and it ran like new again. Had every intention of driving it, but life got in the way and it sat all summer. I'd start it every now and then and wash the tree dander off of it but never went anywhere with it. Which pretty much brings us up to date on it.

I've got the money just sitting here waiting for nice weather so I can plate/insure it....I will drive it this year. I've got a set of tires on Iroc wheels that will get swapped to the factory wheels (I've actually got two sets, one chrome and one matte, need to decide which to use). I'm also contemplating pulling the back of the trans off to see about fixing my reverse. It pops out if you don't hold it. But it's drive-able as is, and I've got too many other projects to work on.

                    Some pictures.

S10 I traded the 94 for. 2.2 5speed. Was a fairly clean truck. Got awesome gas mileage and was a good daily driver. It had been lowered 5/6 before I got it.

The Formula loaded up. Note the missing stickers on the drivers door. Kids dad owned a body shop, rear bumper has been replaced at some point (it's red underneath). Not a real big fan of the "chrome" trim around the body lines either. Still haven't taken that off yet.

Under hood. Car had/has Pacesetters, CAI, cat back, tune, when I got it.

                    Getting ready to come out.

                    On the ground.

                    In the garage.

                    More in the next post.

                      Bore with the factory piston.

                      Offending springs.

I also did poly motor/trans mounts but can't find a pic of the collapsed stock ones next to the new ones. Just imagine squished rubber next to shinny red poly here.

                      Interior.

And I'm not afraid to use the trunk. Friend had some extra patio pavers left over from a project. Literally only had to drive down the block like this. Scraped tail pipe going up the driveway. I've since replaced the X-plod speakers with factory grills. PO had some 4" screws running into the plastic to hold them in.

Managed to get the wheels changed out. Took the tires off of the factory wheels last night. Removed the Irocs and tires today. Even though they held air fine, I put new valve stems in the Firebird wheels. Easier to do it now while it's apart than have to break it down later. Plan to put insurance on tomorrow and make it to the SOS sometime this week.

Edit: I don't know WTF is up with the pictures. I got a new phone last week, apparently I need to play with the settings some.

Put insurance on yesterday and made it to the SOS today to renew the plate. I don't know why, but the cost went up. $94 for just the renewal. Last time I did it, it was like $60. Tossed one of my extra batteries in and went for a drive when I got home. Got it up to temp and filled the tank. Need to hit the car wash soon too.

What are the odds of this being the mileage when I connected the battery.

Picked up some rotors/pads from Boost Addict yesterday. Also got the calipers, but I didn't need those so they'll just go on the shelf as spares. My front rotors were warped and the pads were getting down there, so it was time for an upgrade. Tossed them on today after work. Haven't really driven it to see how they compare to the old parts...but they can't be any worse.

Old vs. New. Note the pitting on the blank one. Thin old pads.

                              Pad starting to crack.

Hiding behind the wheel. Once the weather clears up for more than a day I'll wash the car.
