Slow build: 1999 6.2L "budget turbo" Trans Am

  • [Project] Slow build: 1999 6.2L "budget turbo" Trans Am

    This will be a very conserative paced build, but I will try to be as detailed as possible. First off, the car:

    1999 Firebird W68
    factory 3.42 rear with G80 posi traction option

    The engine was locked and the trans was already removed at purchase. The only body damage was a cracked pass fender. Paid $650 for the body and scraped the motor for $40, so $610 total. Next I purchased a WS6 front bumper, high rise rear hatch, pass fender, and aftermarket ram air hood. Total $600 for all body parts. New total for car is $1210 and I still need the Trans Am rear bumper.

    Next is the engine. I have a iron 6.0l that was bored .065 over and stuffed with LS3 pistons and rods. Scored the set of low mile "take out" piston and rods on LS1Tech for $150 shipped. There was barely any carbon on any of them. Its a performance shop in Texas that builds up LS motors, and sometimes they sell the useable stockers. I aluminum blasted these and "Chaps Automotive" in Detroit on E. Grand Blvd did the block work and assembled the short block. Thanks Tom at Chaps! Total for machine work including assembly, new rings, all new bearings, decking the block, and line honing was $800. Very pleased with the work.

    I also picked up some brand new L92 heads a year ago, which I hand ported. Paid $450 for the heads. I have a set of Manley .650 lift dual springs. Picked these up from a Ebay seller for $150. Cam is a copy of the Comp cam 231/247 .617/ .624 113 lsa. This guy made 497rwhp N/A with this same cam, same cubes, bone stock motor , stock intake, with only upgrade 1 5/8" eBay headers:http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87192

    This is what sold me on buying this cam. This was another forum find for $200. Thsi was suposed to be a N/A build. Then it all hit the fan. While searching the net I found this article. They used the same cam (with the exception of lees duration on the exhaust side of .239 vs. .247). All in a 5.3l turned 383 stroker with 317 heads. It was bored from 3.78 to 3.898, then boosted!!! That was .118 took out the block. This is done all the time! I feel safe boosting my .65 over 6.0l. Here is the article: http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...t/viewall.html

    The 113 lsa was the key according to this article. Not much of a turbo guru, just learning from others. I'm sure there is a ton of other cams I could use, but I'm going to follow their build and see the results I get.

    Engine:
    6.0l bored to 6.2l
    LS3 pistons and rods
    LSR cam (copy) 231/247 .617/ .624 113 lsa
    Ported L92 heads
    Stock LS3 intake
    90mm Edelbrock throttle body
    ARP head studs
    LS9 head gaskets

    For the trans I have a 2003 4L80e. I am adding a trangso hd2 shift kit. I will probably use either a Circle D or Revmax converter to keep it budget friendly. This is my budget build. Here are some pics:

    Sounds like it will be a wicked build!

    2 things come to my attention though.
    The square port heads do not seem to like the standard split duration cams we all are used too in gen III land. That previous build used gen III 317 head's. You might spend a little time seeing what you can dig up on a different cam, I feel that could leave a lot on the table.

    Secondly...please for the love of all that is holy, do not cheap out on a converter. Coming from someone who has gone through 4 converters and 3 trans the last 3 year's alone, I can tell you, get a quality piece. Yank, PTC, PI Vig, etc

    Otherwise, can't wait to see it come together!

      Thanks for the advice! By the way, when its time to install the motor I may need to ask you a few seeing how you have already swapped a v8 into an original v6 car.

      As for the cam, this cam is made specifically for the rectangle port heads. Here is a link to the advertisement for the cam I have. http://www.mtiracing.com/Purchase/LS...1LRR-HR13.html. I will probably stick to this one. But I am definately going to consider the torque converter upgrade. I would like others to chime in with there various brands of converters and their results. Pros and cons encouraged

        I'm not an engine builder, turbo expert, or tuner. What I know is from reading online, but those cam specs do not look ideal for turbo.

          I would have said the same thing til I read that article. Like I stated i the op, I know that there is probably better cams, but I just want to see if I duplicate some of that build (cam wise), what could I get for rwhp. I have all the parts already besides the turbo items. So this should be interesting.

            Slow motion beats no motion, right? Well I have the motor together. Still need to get a stall converter for trans. I'm rethinking the turbo idea. I don't know if I really want to boost this motor being that it is bored 0.65. Thompson Automotive out of Texas recommends N/A on their LQ4's bored 0.65, with a few running low amounts of nitrous. Think I might just run N/A. I do however have a 6.0 and a running LS1 so maybe a turbo build is still in the future.

              When it comes time for turbo components, be sure to get in touch as we carry all major brands and will not be beat for price! Can also get you set-up with a kit as well!

                  K, build looks good but I have a concern and it's those pistons to valve.......I'm building a 408 and those truck heads have a MONSTER valve in them 2.165 and with that cam I would worry.
                  You have no valve relief at all in them pistions.
                  I have a friend who build a 6.0 and used the same heads and had to fly cut the valve relief in the stock pistions and they had a -6 CC dish.
                  Just saying.....nice build though

                        I said this would be a slow build, but I didn't think it would havetaken this long. Latest news is the motor is built, trans has the HD2 kit installed, and they are both in the car. I broke down over the winter and bought a Precision triple disk billet convertor and a Borg S475. I put the 6.2L (iron 6L that was bored and now has LS3 internals) in my work truck last year. And the engine in my Firebird is an iron 370 now. All my machine work was done by FastTime Racing in Wyandotte. I think they are one of the better machine shops in southeast Michigan, and that is said with no malice to any of the other shops around. I just appreciate the quality of their work and their professional attitude!

                        With that said, what is a build thread without pics......

                          I ended up picking up a new S475 locally for cheap, couldn't pass up the deal. But I do still need wastegates, got two builds going at once and both are draining my already empty pockets. I will be contacting you soon. Thanks!!!!
