General Altimax Arctics.
Couldn't beat the deal Tire Rack was running - $50 Rebate (from General) on a set of four General tires, and then another $50 rebate (From Tire Rack) on a set of four winter tires - and then you also get a $50 certificate towards four non-winter tires of the same brand in the spring. The all-seasons on the Cavalier will likely need to be replaced next year, so this works out perfectly.
The General tires are under $70 a tire, and they're a previous-gen Nokian Hakkapeliitta tread pattern, which would explain just why they such monsters in the snow.
I was also considering the Michelin Xi3s that we have on the Cruze (which are fantastic), as those are LRR tires (without being awful), have great dry/wet characteristics, handle snow great, wear very well (and have a treadwear warranty - on winter tires) and actually handle better than the stock FuelMaxes.
They had a larger manufacturer rebate ($70 vs $50, plus the $50 TR rebate), and would only be about $20 more for the set - but the all-seasons were almost double the price of the Generals, and the better out of the two available wasn't that much better than the already excellent RT43 all-seasons (in the tire size, it was #1 and the Generals #4 - out of like 30 tires, pretty close). And actually, though the Xi3 is a little better in dry/wet, as well as ride/noise/treadwear, the Arctic is better in light and deep snow.
I'd certainly recommend the Xi3 (they get us up our driveway with more snow than the car has ground clearance, with no issue), so I can imagine the Arctics will be just as great.
All in all, the full set of these Arctics cost $323, and thus will be $223 after the rebates. At least I still own something with small tires, love how cheap they are!
