  • [Project] Yamaha XS750 Cafe Racer

Haha, I know its not an Fbody, but it is a project I am working on.

My brother worked at the Dodge Dealership in Taylor when his manager asked him if he might be interested in restoring a bike for him (it was his sons bike, he we over seas and his dad wanted to fix it up for him) well my brother took the bike home to fix it up for him, after about 6 months the guy found out his son was gonna junk it or something and didn't really want it anymore. so it sat in my brothers garage forever.. I saw the bike and asked my brother about it, he said its not his but he'll ask his manager if he would sell it, me and my buddy bought the bike for $200 bucks, It was in pieces spread between like 3 boxes.. this was 3 years ago.

well me and my buddy decided to start working on the bike, and turn it into a cafe racer style bike, the engine on the bike was in pretty poor shape, it didn't run, we didn't know when the last time it did run was, a spark plug was broken off in the head and the points ignition setup was missing pieces.. so we picked up a used engine/trans combo that was running and only has 4000 miles on it. we are about to drop that in tonight hopefully, Ill keep you guys as up to date on this as possible. we are going budget build on this.

if you have any ideas or thoughts about the bike, lemme know.. we are always open for suggestion.

side note: if there is anyone out there who might be willing to do some simple fabrication work, we'd really appreciate it

just a small update on the project:

we pulled the old wiring harness of the bike, and decided to mount the engine (easier said than done).

the old engine was removed out of the bike by my friend and my brother, the engine was already halfway torn apart to make it easier to remove, the new engine we have we are trying not to take anything apart, because it is a great running engine, with no leaks, and we don't want to have to order gaskets for it. the driveshaft was in the way so we removed the rear wheel and then the driveshaft assembly. after about 2 hours of trying we still haven't been able to get the engine in.. there is one small part that is hitting the frame keeping us from putting it in, its really frustrating at this point, but as soon as that engine goes in, the rest of the bike should come together nicely.

I think we will give it another try, but this time with a few pry bars and see if we cant get it to go, the engine is pretty heavy and awkward to maneuver around in such a small area.

side note: we are going to be replacing all the fluids, does anyone have any recommendations for what brand and such I should use?
    I have to replace:
    Engine oil and filter (10w30?)
    Trans Fluid ??
middle and final gear oil (80W90)
    fork oil ??
    Lube driveshaft ??
    Lube wheel bearings ??
    spark plugs and wires ??
    blinker fluid

Good to see someone else is working on a project bike, I have a POS '75 CB750 in the garage I picked up some time last year for $50, I'm going to get started on it pretty soon too. Making a custom softtail bobber out of parts from 3 other CB750's a friend has. Basically just frankenstein-ing a bike together out of spare parts, but it should be decent when it's done, if it's ever done. . . lol
