  • If you're not going with an AI cam kit where it comes with all the stuff you need, then yeah that sounds like a good direction to go.

    • I'll have to see what his package price is...like I said, I'm not really sold on that cam, but it may be a good option to just get everything then sell off what I don't need/want.

      • Having stored my Camaro in a 10x20, that is definitely not enough room especially if you are going to be dropping the cradle out. I would venture a guess that even a 10x25 is going to be a tight fit once you get the cherry picker on the rad support.

        • Thoughts on used rockers and pushrods?

Would those still be good to use, or are those the kind of things that you shouldn't buy used?

          • Just my opinion never skimp on the valvetrain. Thats the heart of the engine. Its what allows everything to take place. Also with roller rockers there is a bunch of needle bearings for the roller tip. If they go, say hello to needle bearings all over the engine. You can't tell if that guy revved the piss out of the those rockers, or hell he doesn't even list if they are SA or NSA.

Building an engine is no where to be cheap. If you can't afford to go big then stay stock. I spent like 10k and haven't even touched the trans or engine yet.
It really depends on what you want to do, if you wanna be cheap, stock cars all the way.

            • Really for me, it's more the fact that if I have options A and B, there's really no performance/reliability difference, but B is cheaper, that's obviously the one I'm going to go with. So I was really wondering if getting used valvetrain parts would create a significant "performance/reliability difference." Apparently they do, so I'll avoid those.

I'm pulling the trigger on renting a 10x25 or 10x30 storage space today, getting the car towed there tomorrow. Once it's there, I can get to work.

              • So here's what I'm thinking: full rebuild. Then, get this cam kit:

                http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMP-CAM-CHE...8ef722&vxp=mtr

                Other parts:

Pushrods (do I need a different length?)
                Rockers
                Valve seals
                Rocker studs
                Impala head gaskets
                Timing chain
                timing cover gasket
new oil pan (mine's rather beat up and rusty)
Converter (looking at this one...thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/130887041689...S:1123&vxp=mtr)
                trans cooler
                trans temp gauge
                LS1 steering shaft
                oil pump
                tune
                engine bay paint
shop use (going to tow the car to Tech Shop in Allen Park and do the work there. $75/mo with my MSU ID)

Should come out to about $3500. Any thoughts? Anything I missed?

                  • Will that just be part of the rebuild? Or is that something extra I have to get?

                    • I wouldnt do all this work without doing a rear main. I think they are fairly inexpensive.

                        • If you plan on rebuilding it and have the machine shop assemble your short block they should supply and install one. Nothing sucks more than a rear main oil leak, ask me how I know....

Yes that's a rear main seal and housing. All you need is a new seal, you can reuse your housing.

@meissen? @JoeliusZ28? @birdie2000? @Fox Slaughter? @c0ncEpT? Anybody else who wants to chime in? Here's my parts list. What do you guys think? I trust your guys' knowledge, so if you guys don't have any serious objections, I'll start buying parts.
