  • [Project] Project FireTurd

    http://www.fullthrottlev6.com/forums...ad.php?t=59648

I already have a few threads on the project, so I figred instead of trying to keep up another one, I'd just post a link to the thread that's prob going to be the most ketp up to date.

    Goals:
build a nice compromise between a drag car and an AutoX car. I know theres going to be compromises (especially in suspension setup), but I'm building this to have fun and enjoy (and beat the piss out of it), so I really dont want to limit myself to one kind of fun.

    Body:
The car is getting torn down to almost nothing, painted, fixed, new interior, etc. As far as color, I'm leaning towards 2 Lotus colors, Nightfall Blue or Graphite grey. I'd like to find something a little darker than the Graphite grey though...

    Engine:
So far I have decided to keep the 3800 v6, but it's going to be force fed. Ive got alot of pressure from a few of my FBody friends to LSx/LQ4 the car, but Ive got enough homework catching up on this body, why double it w/ another engine.

    Trans:
Keeping the A4, until it explodes, which it will Then I'll decide if i want to T5 or adapt a T56 to it

    Suspension:
no idea, ask me again in 6mos... I'm still doing my homework, any input would be aprreciated

    Due Date:
It's going to be a looooooooong term project, I'll update the thread above and then bump this one so you guys get a heads up. Once stuff starts falling into place, and getting closer to completion, I may just edit this thread, and move all the pics/my posts over to here.
I'd like to have it done for Next summer (2011), but w/ the economy, going back to school, home priorities, etc, I'm sure you can all understand if it doesnt get finished till 2012

    Couple of idle thoughts...

First, it's good to see you not doing a LS/LQ swap...that herd is big enough...

However, I've seen quite a few failed 3800 build-ups...seems that everyone is bound and determined to try to re-invent the wheel...have any details on plans you might have there?

This will be my 3rd 3800 build (my imp first a top swap, then a L26 GenV ground up build http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a17...008/?start=all , then my buddy's 3400> L26 genV build), so hopefully by now i have alittle bit of an idea wahts going on LOL. Im not trying to reinvent the wheel or go w/ HUGE numbers, just trying to make the car a little more fuin

Right now I'm look @ running a ZZP power lig (modified) on the drivers side)

possibly on the pass side too, I have to see how it sits, i ran out of patience last night after this test fit
I'm also looking a twin GT28/GT30s, nothing too big, trying to keep it as simple/small as possible, but still enough boost to scare the crap out of some of the v8s around here. I'm still doing the math on the turbos to see if they are right for the build, Tim King ran his gt35r's into the 8's, I dont want to go anywhere near that fast LOL.
Also looking into the Rad relocate to free up some more room in the engine bay for plumbing, found a few good threads on this over on LS1tech.
Prob going to go w/ either a Stattama S2 CAM, or something similar.
Heads are going to be done by a local guy i trust, he's been building boosted SVOs for a while now, either that or a set of Abbott racing heads.
The only thing different I'm looking into doing is either fitting a L26 UIM on this

as you can see there are some clearence issues, but if you get rid of the EGR/PCV it shouldnt be too much of an issue, theres room for clearence under the cowl

The other thing I was looking into was running L67 heads, and plugging the injector bosses on the FBody intake, then smoothing out the runners, just so the fuel gets injected into the cyl...

those last 2 things are still on the drawing board though, and i want to do a little more research before comitting to them....

the other reason Im looking at running a W v/s an F body intake:

Theyre getting shipped out for flow testing, the W intake will obviously need to be modified a bit to fit though
Here's the full thread on it

First off sorry for the crapp pix, but my SD card went missing, so youll have to deal w/ cell phone pix until i get it back this weekend
anyway project for the last 2 days was mounting my Wbody UIM/LIM on the engine. Big deal right? wrong, inlet would be facing the back of the engine, so i modified the LIM and front cover so it could sit "properly" for a RWD car

Ill give you guys the details of what all had to be done etc this weekend when i can get some better pix, these turned out like shit, so I'll just stop here for the night

Also started stripping the paint off the exterior of the car. removed the body moulding and keep it off ( i think ) "FIREBIRD" is next, but im debating if I will keep that off or not, depends on if i can find replacement lettering I guess

                  Bit of a setback yesterday...
Talked to the guy @ the annodizing shop, he HIGHLY recommends against annodizing CAST aluminum, even once its polished. Says the colors never set properly b/c when its being cast it sometimes takes on some properties from the "sand" molds they use and can streak, or worse it sometimes changes colrs (ununiformly) under heat, and since this is going in the engine bay, i decided against it. Thats all i need is a tiedied gross blue that was once black LOL

So its on to find a decent powder coating place.

Now for the good news, Only 2 bolts hold the engine in! the motor mount bolts, so that SHOULD be coming out this weekend if i get some free time. Then i can transfer all the accys on to this engine and start fabbing pieces for an alt bracket/tensioner/ ilder etc...
My WBody L26 intake has arrived in FL for flow testing. It will be up against a stock Fbody UIM and a ported F body LIM, but I'm 90% sure Im going to run the W LIM on the car, jut to set it apart a bit. Its not a direct bolt on, but if youre interested heres the thread again
                  http://www.fullthrottlev6.com/forums...ad.php?t=59691
The LIM will be going to my buddy's house tonight for "alteration"

Really bummed about the annodizing too, thought it wouldve looked badass. Now Im debating polishing anything at all. Im pretty sure everything will come out "smooth" after being P-C'd, so im debating if its worth the effort/time to polish all this stuff

                    Pulled the engine last night

its now on the stand for some mock up work....

dont mind the VC on the UIM, i know it doesnt go there

The "other" engines pics are from an engine thats is going into a 3400->3800 S/C swap we're doing on my buddy's Imp... he's starting to gather the rest of his parts, so i figured I'd get off my arse and get my engine out.. The belt routing/alt reloc is proving to be a serious PITA at this point. Im looking at having to modify a LS1 tensioner, and try to use the A/C bracket to count the Alt..

YAY that also means hacking up the wire harness, or order a bunch of connectors (m&f) to "extend" the reach on the relocated stuff

Messed around w/ belt routing etc last night. Got it Kinda setup,

today, im going to work on a tempale so i can move the alte to where the A/C used to be so I can keep the top of the engine bay looking a bit cleaner.Something more along the lines of this:

Well after a few modifications, I go tthe alt to sit where i wanted it to. Also the broken A/C bracket came in handy (after being canabalized), see if you can find it LOL

The pulley I am holding is the aprox loc of where the tensioner is going. My buddy "keeps forgetting" to bring his spare tensioner over
May not be the best angle/shot in the world, but the alt doesnt stick out as far as the engine mount does....Barely

the smaller pulley in the second pic clears the Oil Press sensor fine too (again bad angle)

After looking @ wiring diagrams I decided it was much easier to "mod" my alt to fit then try a differnt style alt (cheaper too )
Ground down/cut up one of the "ears" to fit in the space on the block where the A/c sits (or PSP on a Wbody)

Removed the rear "ear" to allow fo a little more clearence

still needs to be "cleaned" up a bit, just rough cutting and grinding to check clearences

Also canabalized my broken A/C bracket to use as an idler (between crank and alt)

                          Little update:
Got the flow results on the 2 intakes

Went ahead and put the manis on a stock head and one of my roughed-out intake ports.
Test#1 is the stock head and FWD intake mani on stock heads, then I did RWD intake on stock heads, then went to my rough-ported heads with RWD manis, then rough ported heads FWD manis, then bare ported heads, then bare stock heads...

Colors: blue green orang red black yellow
gains of about 5-10 hp (est.)
