  • [Project] I have a few questions...

    Ok so first of all, im not that good with car knowledge. Still trying to learn things from this site. But I have a couple questions...

    1. I found a camaro for sale, it has a v6 and all stock. Lady said she just wants to get rid of it, but it has a knock when she starts it up. She said she is willing to sell it for 1K. The body is nice and there are a couple new parts, like the water pump starts, little things like that... Now I was wondering, if I buy this car, drive it threw winter and save up enough money, then replace the engine when I get it, can I put a LT1 in here? And if so, whats the general prices of the engine? I would want to build the car up as the money comes in. But I dont know what all would have to be done...

    2. I was thinking of buying that car that WNCC Doug posted for that lady, (Im still waiting to here back from her). and basically doing the same thing. Putting a new engine in it, cause im sure its going to need one soon. What would it run me on average to do something like this to a car?

    Like I said, I really dont know to much about cars, but want to learn more. I have a friend that knows a lot and would help me with anything I needed with putting a new engine in and everything. What do you guys think?

    Any car with a knock is just waiting to go...probably wont last you the winter...you can find 3.4 v6 camaros for pretty cheap already. Just now there is a 95 with 80k miles for 1750obo on craigslist. So I dont think it would be worth 1k if your going to end up replacing the engine with another 3.4

    replacing an engine labor wise will cost around 1k through a shop plus the engine. swapping them really isnt too hard and there are a ton of members on here that would probably give you a hand if you wanted to give it a try yourself

      well I wouldnt want to put another 3.4 in it. I wanted to put the 350 in it. I wasnt expecting the car to last threw winter, but she said that it just recently started. I think either way I go, im probley going to have to do a swap on the engine possibly anyways. Do you happen to know how much a Engine would cost, or know of anywhere where they would have them?

      I cant wait to learn more about this kind of stuff lol..

        To me, a rod knock overwhelms whatever new parts are on a car.

        You don't say what year the car is, but 1K would be a max price for me.

        And plan on 2K for a budget to stuff a LT1 in there...

            Hey Bryan,

            I'm actually going through the process of swapping my 3.4L v6 to an LT1 right now. I'm in the same boat as you, also, in that I don't know much about the mechanical aspects of our cars -- I've been an appearance guy since I got my car. Ask me any question about hoods, ground effects, or spoilers for our cars and I can give you tons of ideas. Ask me any question about the mechanics... well I can try.

            Anyway, the LT1 is a relatively easy swap. What I've learned so far is this...

            1. LT1s can be found for relatively cheap on craigslist or ebay. I found an LT1 and transmission on craigslist only a 20-minute drive away for $1,000 and it came with tons of extra parts (driver's side door, passenger side door, rear hatch, rear tail panel, all 4 tires and rims, the entire wiring harness inside and out, ecu, etc).

            2. If you decide to get an LT1 w/ transmission combo instead of rebuilding your v6 4L60e, make sure the 4L60e transmission is from an FBody. The Corvette combos have a different length and from what I understand leads to other things that need to be swapped.

            3. The v6 fuel pump will work with a v8 -- change the fuel pump at your own discretion, but I've seen people on CamaroZ28.com claiming they're making 10+ track passes on their cammed LT1 with a stock v6 fuel pump.

            4. Rear end -- this is what I was asking about just recently. Apparently, from what I understand, the only difference between the v8 and the v6 is the calipers/drums, lsd/posi, and gear ratio. That said - if you don't care about switching over to calipers (I don't see any reason why it'd be absolutely necessary, although I intend to switch over myself) it seems the only things you'd have to switch over in the stock rear end is to a LSD and change the gears.

            5. When selecting an LT1, try and get one that's as close to the same year as the vehicle. From what I understand, there's a lot of wiring differences between the different years of the Camaro/Firebird, so if you get a 97 LT1 to throw into your 93 Camaro (for example), there might be a lot of differences and you'll be doing more splicing to the harness than if you got a 93 LT1 for a 93 Camaro.

            If you'd like, we're having a v6 pulling party at my house on Saturday November 1st. I live in Macomb, not too far from Hazel Park. It'd give you a good idea of what is entailed in pulling the 3.4L v6 and transmission out of the car. You're also more than welcome to come over when we do the LT1 install so you can get an idea on that too, but that might be a couple months away because I plan to cam and do some goodies to the LT1 while it's out of the car. Either way, I hope to take *tons* of pictures of the process so there will be a good writeup in the end of the full process start to finish.

              Its a 95 camaro. And yeah if I did decide to get it, I wasnt going to offer her the complete $1,000 she is asking. But thanks on the estimate price for the budget.

                    Hey no problem, with starting at 2:30 and everyone figuring it takes 4 hours to do the drop, it'll take until 6:30pm at the *earliest* but knowing how things go on my car it'll be later
