  • New turbo question. Would you.....

The 5.3 that i will be using is an 03 with 27k on it. I know I will be replacing lifters, pushrods, and valve springs, along with headstuds and headgaskets. Question is would you replace the timing chain and oilpump? I could pull the pump and port it, but with such low mileage, im wondering if i should just save my money for other parts. I know I "should" but I read a lot of guys on various forums dont. I have another 5.3 that I want to "build" for more boost down the road. Thx!

IDK, seems like it might be a waste to me. But if your pulling the cam for something less ridiculously small, I would throw the LS2 chain on it. Cant hurt regardless, $40 well spent.

Like Spencer said, if you're doing a new cam, might as well get a new chain as you have to take the old one off anyways. For the oil pump I don't think it could hurt. You're now pumping oil to the turbo right? I'd hate to no get enough oil out to that thing. You can always transfer the pump to your "built" engine later too.

When I changed the cam in my car (50k miles and well cared for), I replaced the oil pump with a new LS6 pump (stock). I am getting about 5-8psi all across the board increase in oil pressure. Used the LS2 chain also.

Change um. Maybe the stock parts would hold out but if you don't change them and something breaks you'll kick yourself.

Depends on how long it'll be before you have a "built" engine.

With how cheap 5.3's are - I'd change the cam, pushrods, springs, headgaskets, studs - and run the crap out of it.

Anyone have excess slack with their LS2 timing set? Mine has a bit more than I like. I'm thinking about putting a tensioner in, or getting a different set

Do a fresh pump, ls2 chain, and cam. Let me know and I can get it for you!

There is some slop - everyone complains about it, but it's not enough to cause an issue.

I wouldnt worry about a new pump, just port what you have and shim the relief valve for slightly higher pressure. Like mentioned above I would go with an ls2 chain for a good cheap upgrade. Did you mention putting rod bolts in it? I would definetly do rod bolts. I actually have a set of arp2000 bolts that have less than 1k miles on them I would sell cheap if your interested.

not sure which other motor you have to build Mike but if your looking for a good foundation there is a guy over on motown that has a freshly rebuilt 5.3 with katech rod bolts and arp head studs for sale.
