  • Project: Huron Speed + 1999 Z28

I am just getting started with the actual build but I’ve spent the past several weeks planning and collecting parts. I’m keeping the build simple and in an effort to minimize cost and maximize reliability I’m using lots of stock GM parts. I don’t have any specific power goals; just looking for a fun street car on 93 octane. I plan to start around 8psi with the potential to add more boost with meth injection in the future.

    Here are the details:
    -1999 Camaro Z28 with T56 and Moser 9”
    -Stock shortblock
-Huron Speed turbo kit (single front mount)
    -317 truck heads
    -02-04 LS6 cam
    -LS9 valve springs
    -LS9 head gaskets
    -ARP head studs
    -60# Siemens injectors
    -RPS 50mm BOV
    -Derale 16925 pusher fans
    -76-78mm turbo (undecided)
    -Wastegate (undecided)
    -Boost controller (undecided)

I have almost everything I need except for the turbo, wastegate, and boost controller. For the turbo I’m leaning towards the Turbonetics Hurricane series (either a 76 or 78) but I might be persuaded to try On3 Performance. Jon (Superman09) from Huron Speed showed me an On3 turbo he has and it definitely looks like a nice unit and hard to beat for the price. For the wastegate I’m looking for a nice used Tial MVR or Precision PW46. If I don’t find what I’m looking for by the time I need it I will just buy new.

    On to the pictures…

I just received the Huron Speed kit last night and I am very impressed. The pictures don’t do it justice. These guys thought of everything so the kit is very complete (gaskets, couplings, alternator relocation brackets, etc):

    Truck Manis:

    317 Heads and LS9 springs:

    ARP Head Studs:

    LS9 Head Gaskets:

    LS6 Cam:

    Siemens Injectors:

The teardown begins! My plan is to swap the heads, cam, injectors and get it running on 2 bar speed density before installing the turbo. In the meantime I am selling my current setup to help fund this project. Most parts are spoken for but PM me if you are interested in some Livernois Stage 2 LS6 heads (64cc chambers and Livernois springs/retainer good for .690 lift). I only ran them for 1 summer (less than 3,000 miles).

Taking old cam out / Installing the LS6 cam:

Head swap is next on the agenda…

I will try to update this as often as possible but the progress will be slow at first. My wife and I just moved into a new house late last year so this spring I am working on the yard, landscaping, etc. Once the house stuff is complete (or when it’s raining) I plan to make better progress

awesome project! i'm very interested in the huron speed turbo kit. you should make good power with that cam! i ran speed density, and was nervous about it, but my car ran perfect. it started up on the hottest days, and the coldest days and ran great. i'll be watching this thread too! PM me about price on heads

About time you lazy putz! Haha

Going to follow this closely, excited for you as this is really what I wanted to do with the car when the 5.3 went in years ago.

PS Wanna do me a HUGE favor and mail me the lifter/cam install rods? I can email you a prepaid return label to get it to my work?

Yeah, no problem. You might need to explain to me how the label things works though. Do I just drop it off at the UPS store with the label taped on? Do you need measurments / weight before you can provide a label?

                              Small update…

I ordered a Burkhart front bumper support today and I collected a few more parts this week. Here is my RPS 50mm blow off valve:

I also got my turbo drain from RPS:

And finally I got my Derale fans:

I was hoping to make more progress this week on the head swap but instead I was preparing for another trip to China (it’s my second time in March and my third time since December). I spent most of my free time this week trying to get things done around the house and spending time with my wife and daughter before I leave.
