  • Procharger??

My fiance and I are looking to give our 85 Trans Am a boost in hp and he's looking into possibly a procharger. Honestly I haven't heard much about them. Have any of you? If so any of you who have put them on a 305??? What is your take on them? Really don't wanna spend the $$$$ just to have to rip it off later.

    I see it two ways:
1: if the car is all original and you want to keep it as a collectors item, then a supercharger may be an option. But you will see limited gains because of the heads on the 305s
2: if you have added mods to the car and want it to be a weekend cruiser more so than show car, your best option would swap in a 350 sbc. If done right, it should be faster with about the same money as a supercharger.

Let us know what your intentions are for the car so we can get a better idea.

What do you want to know? My 305 made 415 rwhp but it wasn't all due to the ProCharger. I would not put a ProCharger on a stock 305. Take the $4k and have a 383 built instead.

To put a little more info around the 415 number, the only stock parts left on the motor were the engine block and the crankshaft. The side effects of a big motor where burning up the transmission on the first dyno run, then stretching the rear end on the second dyno run (after a new trans was installed). 3rd gen cars were not made to go fast inexpensively. You'll need a lot of supporting modifications as your power increases.

We are looking to keep the 305 due to the fact that it was just installed less than 2 years ago (previous engine had sucked up a screw...don't ask). The transmission was also recently rebuilt and we are looking to replace the headers and y-pipe. Basically it is used as his summer car, but he now wants more hp. Oh and don't think I'm some bad fiancee and wouldn't get him a 350 for it when we were replacing the engine cuz I offered, but was turned down.

Sounds like your married to the 305 and dead set on a supercharger. I'd go with the Vortech non-intercooled kit over the ProCharger. It'll be easier to install and you won't have to move the battery.

A 350 with the TPI setup will give you more HP for less money than a blower. I'd bet a 383 would be less expensive than a supercharger; but it's your money!

Well you're right we are basically married to the 305, but I'm not completely dead set on a supercharger. It's something he was looking into, but I'm open to other options that will not require an enigine swap. Unfortunately it would basically KILL me to have to remove that engine after all the time and $$$ i spent putting it in. His original plan was to keep it basically stock but then he started wanting more hp after the fact. Now I'm just trying to figure out the best possible way.

Once you start, you can't stop. HP is addicting.

Buy a $500 Nitrous Oxide kit. Instant HP on the cheap.

Yes I know!!! LOL nitrous is another option, but is there a way to permanently set the amount? Cuz if he dumps too much in and blows the enigine I swear someone will have to bail me out of jail

there are things called nitrous jets. they allow a certain amount in. you install that, and get the car tuned. from what i know, matt (scholtmj) is the guy to talk to about modding a 3rd gen. i could use a girlfriend like you. seems like everyone i find says i spend too much time and money on my car and not enough on them! good luck. let us know what you decide to do

I might be the guy to talk to about supercharging a 305 (I don't think anyone else was crazy enough to do the same), but there are several others here with way more time in a 3rd gen than I. Thanks for the vote of confidence though!

                            305TransAm,
Take the car to a tuning shop and have them install the Nitrous. Once the fuel and nitrous jet sizes are picked and installed the only thing you'll have to do is re-fill the bottle and buy new tires.
