No, they aren't. I should have elaborated when I explained the differences. Your car has a 4L60E. My car has a 700R4. Your car's PCM tells the computer when to shift, mine does not. They are the same transmission in essence, but the 700R4 is all mechanical, while the 4L60E is electronically controlled.Nick H.

i disagree you can do it cheap if you do alot of the shit yourself and look for deals.doing that isnt skimping out on anything. ive pieced a fully working turbo kit for a 4 cylinder car for dirt cheap when i was in highschool.

ask johnny how easy it is to do a cheap turbo build....he went from doin a TT kit and leaving the rest of the car stock, to having a 666rwhp car with about $30k into it. Not to mention the hours upon hours that he, and friends, me included, spent on his back on a cold garage floor. And then after all that, he ended up sellin it anyway lol. My advice, throw bolt-ons on it, maybe a 100shot, converter, and gears. If you're driving a stock LT1 now, and you wanna do F.I. you gotta learn how to handle it with 20 extra horses before you go add 70-100. If you're hurtin for cash, doin FI is not the way to go, chances are you're gonna break somethin and if you can't replace it, you're out of a car.

i didnt have $30k into it
Had $25 into the entire car, but thats still a lot.
You need to do more research and figure out if a turbo is really right for you. My personal opinion is that it would be a complete waste to dump a bunch of money into a 6 cyl f-body when once you do that, a v8 one thats looks identical bone stock will give you a run for your money. Sell it and get a V8 car and work off that base.

if you really want to go turbo and make it survive and work well.. just buy a kit or have pace build you one and spend a good amount and it will actually work... a budget build turbo set up is going to be janky and prolly break and run like shit

So what your really saying is I need a V8
I just hate getting all these conflicting opinions from FTV6 and here. V6 guys tell me one thing, and V8 guys tell me another, no wonder I am confused...

hahaha, i don't understand why you are making this so hard. Sure you have some guys over on your 6 cyl forum that run fast times with their FI 6 cyl, but what you are not seeing is all the other hundreds of guys that are either not on the board or don't post up as often that do not run those numbers. If you want to build a turbo v6 to talk about on the v6 forum go ahead..... you will be spending a lot of money, time, effort, and a lot of time wrenching to fix shit, work stuff out, get it running right just to hang with stock V8 guys. If you buy a V8 car, sure you won't have anything special to brag about on the boards for but who cares, you will have the goal you were looking for out of your V6 but a GM piece that is dead nuts reliable. If you want to then customize, you have a wayyyyy better platform with the opportunity for growth being much larger. Take my words of advice and put the FI V6 thought behind you, i guarantee you will regret it if you do it...... I have been down the FI path and i will tell you from personal experience that whatever you think it will cost, it WONT... you WILL get nickel and dimed, and there WILL be expenses you missed, other parts you find you need to change/upgrade, components you need to relocate, etc. Its a money pit, and a LOT of work to get it running how you want it. You are also greatly increasing the risk of failure of components from stress, excess heat from turbos, etc. IMO, sell your car and use the money you were going to spend on this swap and get an LS1 f-body, that sir i will gaurantee you will NOT be disappointed with and will NOT regret! Take it for what you want, my $0.02

With the money and time your going to have invested into a turbo on that V6 it wont even be worth it in the end. It would even be more cost efficent to swap to an LT1 and you would go just as fast if not faster. Plus you will have a better platform to build on.
Take Derek for example. He spent all that money on a supercharger, fuel system, rear end, ect. and he says his new STOCK LS1 TA is way faster than the firebird was. That would be all I needed to hear.

ignore these people who havent been in your situation. Coming from myself who has had a forced induction v6 and did a "budget build" I know I had a s/c kit not a turbo, but you are going to have LOTS of headaches trying to get it all figured out. we had a template to base ours on and it was still a pain. At the end of the day with the supercharged v6 I wasnt even impressed at all, and no matter what you do it will sound like crap. (as all v6's do.) AND now that I have a v8 I laugh at how i used to think my v6 had potential, id be happy when i could pull a holeshot no problem or chirp second with the v6 on just the right pavement. Now with the ls1 I cant even go full throttle or it will just spin all day long, at thirty the back end kicks out, and thats with MINOR boltons.Originally posted by phoenix_rising View PostWow thats a lot of replies for less than a day!

You want any sort of power and great sound.. go V8, heck lt1s are DIRT cheap, and ls1s complete can be had for 3k with accessories. A motor swap is another story though.. lol Easiest option for the money would be nitrous, I just know the hassles we went through with our FI setup and we have our own shop to fab stuff. if you dont have the tools and resources to custom fab stuff your going to be struggling even more.
EDIT and as pace said, LOTS to worry about with FI, I was always worried about something coming loose and keeping the belt tensioned just right. Sure is nice to have a plain and simple motor that I dont have to worry about now.Last edited by Derek; October 30th, 2008, 03:44 PM.-Derek-
