I have been looking online for a while, and I can't seem to find any decent info on which brand of synthetic motor oil offers the best protection, longest lasting, highest HP/torque gains, and just which is the best overall. My V6 is WWAAAAYYYY overdue for an oild change, and since it is a high-mileage engine, I wanted to know which brand of synthetic oil and filter I should use. I need spark plugs, and I might upgrade the plug wires too, but I wanted to know what combination of these items would offer the best results for my car. I am looking for some HP gains between 5-15 HP (I'm thinking optimistically here
) and some kind of torque increase. Does anybody have any suggestions? I have heard good things about NGK plugs, and I have always used Mobil One synthetic High-Mileage formula motor oil, but I don't know what will help motivate my V6 to the highest HP & Torque.

How about plugs? I don't really know of any high-performance plugs, and I also don't know which oil filter to get. . . .Nick H.

Hah!
okay anyways, oil I use mobil 1 NON SYNTHETIC. Dont like synthetic! Plugs, AC-Delco has always done us good. And wires, we always go with Taylor.
Dont go overboard and blow a bunch of money on plugs, its a waste.

I always use synthetic, it reduces wear on engine parts, and it needs to be replaced much less often than petroleum-based engine oils. . . Thanks for the tip on plugs and wires. . . I think I will gain more than 15 hp with a tune up, because my car is in pretty dire need of this stuff. . . . Kinda sluggish, even for a V6, some slight ticking noises, and it feels like the spark plugs are just about whipped anyways. . . .Nick H.

I heard that too, but I haven't been able to find any hard evidence to prove one brand better than all the rest. . . .Originally posted by 99sshavent tried it but royal purple is supposed to be good for power.Nick H.

Mobil one oil, all the way, I run the high mileage stuff in my DD. I've never heard any conclusive evidence that any of the so called hi-perf oils (AMS, Royal Purple, etc).
As for a filter, I've always used fram, since I was 16, that's going to be 14 years in a month. Fram has never let me down, not once, I won't use anything else.
As for plugs, guys on LS1 tech swear by the NGK tr55 plugs for the LS1. However, they are a cheap plug cost wise. I just can't justify buying a cheap plug for a performance application. I'll be changing my plugs for the first time in a few weeks. I'm going with the Bosch Platinum +4. I've used them in the past and had goodluck. As for wires, I need to get them too, I really wann run taylor's cause most people run msd's. However I've heard that some guys have had problems with the boots pulling off taylor's and I may run msd's just because nobody has problems with them and they are the popular safe choice. So, I'd probably go msd if I were you.
Now, you may pick up 1 or 2 hp, but even 5 from a tune up is asking a lot IMO. Get a K&N while your at it if you don't have one. That'll help. Remember these are all just my opinions, but the oil and filter I've used for years and have proven themselves to me.

I have a K&N Cold Air Intake filter attached to the stock ductwork, just for the hell of it, and it seems to free up some power. I need to get a real cold air intake soon. I don't really know what to get as far as plugs go, maybe I'll get the Bosch Platinum +4's that you were talking about. MSD wires are a little more expensive also, but if they have any kind of warranty, I think I will get those. Thanks for the advice, guys! I decided to go with the high-mileage Mobil 1 synthetic too, just so you all know

Royal Purple. No comparisson! I seriously gained 4hp and 6ft/lbs switching from Castrol Syntec to Royal Purple. I had heard about them doing somthing like this on Horsepower T.V. but I didn't believe it. I had my car on the dyno so I said what the hell! It works. Mind you this was a total lubricant change, (Oil, tranny fluid, and rear diff.) but those are some pretty impressive numbers for just a fluid change. Oh yeah, it costs about the same as Mobile 1.

You have to manually assemble the Taylor wires. So if the boot is pulling off of them its because you used too much silicon lube when putting them together or you have wayyyy too much tension on the wire, which is bad! They are an absolute ***** to put together, I dont know how on Earth that boot would fall off....Originally posted by Orange_TerrorHowever I've heard that some guys have had problems with the boots pulling off taylor's and I may run msd's just because nobody has problems with them and they are the popular safe choice.
