  • Wax remover

Hey all you detailers....what are you guys using to remove wax from your car's finish? I use denatured alcohol but was looking for something more wallet friendly.

I've heard Windex or Formula 409.

    Never tried it though...

I usually just wash the car, claybar it, then go through with my detailing process of steps

        Dish Soap!!!

its a degreaser so it takes it right off and doesnt hurt anything.

Dish soap doesn't do jack for me....unless I wash the car like 10 times.

Really...I just use NXT. I wash...water still beads up...wash again, water still beads....yadda yadda yadda....rinse and repeat. Eff this...wipe with denatured alcohol...no more beading water. Isn't that the test for wax presence...water beading?

yeah denatured alcohol definatly takes it off and doesn't hurt the paint, i use it for removing tree sap. Dish Soap SHOULD take the wax off, my question is why do you wanna take it off?

no no no!! water beading only means you have a smooth finish! Normally this recquires wax, but if your paint is in good enough condition it will still bead without wax! beading is only an indicator of how coarse the finish is, beyond what your eye will see. the rougher the paint the more the water will "absorb" (but not really) into it. Its physics and surface tension. Wax simply fills in a rough finish. One test I learned at work was to fill a plastic baggie with water. if it slides off the paint its waxed, if it rolls it isnt... or something like that, been a long time since i had to do that.

Hummm...well after I wipe it with the alcohol the water kinda sheets off, there isn't much beading to speak of. The reason I like removing the wax first is because I like starting with a fresh surface...and believe it or not, with my car being white, old wax seems to take on a yellow hue and I can see it...call me crazy. The car always looks brighter after the wax is off.

I know what you mean, I clay bar my truck with dish soap every spring for that reason.

Nick takes off wax too. . . lol I usually claybar, but I hear that Dawn dish soap is the best for removing everything from the paint.
